Rebecca Rittenhouse has been cast in Hulu's untitled Cable Guy pilot, joining an ensemble already led by Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr., according to Deadline (Deadline).

Rittenhouse will play Robin, a character who has recently broken up with Steven Stephens — played by Wayans Jr. The pilot's logline centres on Chip Douglas, an old-school cable technician played by Johnson, who reconnects with childhood friend Steven. Chip's enthusiasm curdles into obsession. Natasha Rothwell and Crystal Fox round out the previously announced cast.

The project is inspired by the 1996 Jim Carrey film The Cable Guy, but it is not a straight remake. The creators are taking an approach compared to what Fargo did with its television adaptation — borrowing the spirit and tonal world of the original film while building a new story with new characters (Deadline).

A pilot, in television terms, is a single episode commissioned to test whether a full series is worth ordering — no guarantee of a series pickup. This one is produced by Sony Pictures Television, with Johnson and Wayans Jr. serving as executive producers and leads. Rob Rosell, Joe Piarulli and Luan Thomas co-wrote the pilot and serve as co-showrunners. Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty of Original Film, under an overall deal at Sony Pictures Television, are additional executive producers (Deadline).

For Rittenhouse, the role marks a return to Hulu. She previously led the streamer's series Maggie as the title character and co-led the limited series Four Weddings & a Funeral. She recently shot the Kenya Harris pilot Group Chat, also for Hulu, and most recently starred in the Netflix limited series His & Hers. Her film credits include Damien Chazelle's Babylon, Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and the Netflix feature Good on Paper (Deadline).

Rittenhouse is represented by CAA, Common Ground Entertainment, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.

The pilot adds to Hulu's comedy development slate at a moment when streaming platforms are leaning on familiar IP — existing films, books and formats with built-in name recognition — to cut through a crowded field. Whether The Cable Guy pilot earns a full series order will depend on how the finished episode tests with audiences and executives. For now, the cast is set and production moves forward.
