The sequel to Romy and Michele's High School Reunion has added Anna Baryshnikov and Sofia Wylie to its cast, according to Deadline.

The film, a 20th Century Studios production set to stream as a Hulu Original in the United States, has been shooting in Los Angeles since June. Original stars Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino return to lead the cast, reprising their roles as the inseparable best friends who, in the 1997 original, reinvented themselves as successful career women — claiming to have invented the Post-it note — to impress former classmates at their 10-year reunion in Tucson.

A cluster of familiar faces from the first film are back too: Alan Cumming, Janeane Garofalo, Camryn Manheim and Julia Campbell all reprise their roles. New arrivals already announced include Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton and Nathan Lee Graham. The original was released in 1997 by Buena Vista, a Disney label; 20th Century Studios, also under the Disney umbrella, is handling the sequel.

Tim Federle is directing, from a script by Robin Schiff, who penned the 1997 film. Federle produces alongside Laurence Mark, who produced the original. Barry Kemp, Sorvino, Kudrow and Schiff serve as executive producers. Costume designer Mona May, whose work on the first film became part of its pop-culture identity, is also returning, Deadline reported.

For Wylie, the project reunites her with Federle. The two previously worked together on Disney+'s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which Federle created and on which Wylie starred. Wylie's film credits include The School for Good and Evil and The Map That Leads to You, and she will next appear as one of the leads in The Body, a Netflix coming-of-age thriller series from Quinn Shephard.

Baryshnikov most recently starred in Idiotka, a comedy that drew critical acclaim at SXSW. She is known for roles in A24's Love Lies Bleeding and Kenneth Lonergan's Oscar-winning Manchester by the Sea, and has a recurring part in Apple's Cape Fear series. She is also set to appear in Queenstown, Netflix's first New Zealand original.

20th Century Studios confirmed production was under way in an Instagram post on 8 June, and Entertainment Tonight reported that Kudrow and Sorvino are filming the sequel roughly 30 years after the original.

For a film whose cult following was built on chemistry, the draw here is continuity. Schiff wrote both films. May dressed both. Kudrow and Sorvino anchored the first and lead the second. The new arrivals — Baryshnikov, Wylie and their fellow newcomers — fill out a cast that now bridges nearly three decades, without a screen in sight yet to judge what that gap produces.
