Three Lions Die at Tokyo Zoo as Record Heatwave Grips East Asia

Three lions died from suspected heatstroke at Tama Zoological Park in Tokyo within a single week, as a record-breaking heatwave scorches East Asia. A zoo veterinarian observed dehydration and multiple organ failure in the three animals, according to a zoo spokesperson who confirmed the deaths on August 4, 2026. Ten of the park's 16 lions had fallen ill amid the severe conditions.
The deceased animals include a three-year-old lion named Mugi who died on Tuesday, an 11-year-old lion named Ichigo who died on Friday, and a 15-year-old lioness named Luena who died on Sunday. Tama Zoological Park, Tokyo's largest zoo, noted in an official announcement that several lions showed signs of ill health amid a sudden heatwave that began in mid-July. The zoo confirmed Mugi's death around 11 o'clock. Other lions at the facility are currently undergoing treatment.
A Tama Zoological Park spokeswoman noted that although lions are generally thought to tolerate heat well, zookeepers had been strengthening countermeasures because Japan's summer heat comes with high humidity, unlike the dry heat in Africa. Parts of Japan hit 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in recent weeks, qualifying for the new meteorological designation "cruelly hot day" — a category Japan's weather agency created to flag conditions so extreme they pose a direct danger to human health. Between July 20 and 26, nearly 18,600 people were taken to hospital for heatstroke, with 45 of them pronounced dead on arrival, according to Japan's fire and disaster management agency.
The crisis extends across the region. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung declared a national disaster in response to the record-breaking heatwave. During a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Lee instructed officials to support those worst affected by the heat and to inspect power systems amid surging air conditioning demand. South Korea's heat record was broken three times over the past week, with an all-time high of 42.5 degrees Celsius (108.5 degrees Fahrenheit) recorded in the city of Yangsan on Sunday. That is the highest temperature in 122 years of weather observations.
The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency reported that the death toll from the South Korean heatwave had risen to 19, with 13 of the victims aged 80 or above. Since May 15, 2,025 people in South Korea had suffered heat-related illnesses, according to Korea Meteorological Administration data. North Korean state media reported that heat advisories covering much of the country would remain in place through the week, with water parks in Pyongyang drawing large crowds.
The broader context here involves the collision of extreme weather and the infrastructure meant to protect both people and animals in captivity. The fact that 10 of 16 lions fell ill suggests a systemic enclosure failure rather than isolated individual health issues.
