Art Week NYC is described by its organisers as an inaugural citywide event meant to spotlight the breadth of New York's gallery scene, from blue-chip powerhouses to smaller spaces. The November dates place it squarely in the autumn art calendar — the season when New York's major auction houses traditionally hold their marquee evening sales, and when collectors, curators and critics are already in town (Artnews).

The participating galleries read like a roll-call of the global contemporary art market. Hauser & Wirth, founded in Zurich in 1992, now operates spaces from Hong Kong to Los Angeles. Gagosian, arguably the most commercially powerful gallery network in the world, runs outposts in New York, London, Paris, Geneva, Basel, Hong Kong, Los Angeles and Athens. David Zwirner, Pace Gallery and Lisson each maintain multiple international locations. Paula Cooper Gallery, one of the founding galleries of Chelsea's West 21st Street corridor, has been a fixture since 1968 (WWD).

The announcement does not detail specific programming for each gallery — whether the week will feature coordinated openings, curated exhibitions or special commissions.
