Ipswich Town have signed Portuguese defensive midfielder Florentino Luis from Burnley on a five-year contract running until the summer of 2031, with Reuters reporting an initial fee of £16 million (Reuters).

The 26-year-old becomes Ipswich's latest addition as they prepare for life back in the Premier League. Florentino Luis made 31 league appearances last season for a Burnley side that were relegated, having had his loan from Benfica made permanent in June due to an obligation to buy for a reported £20.8m (BBC Sport). A defensive midfielder — the player who sits in front of the back four, breaking up opposition attacks and recycling possession — Luis brings top-flight experience from a difficult campaign at Turf Moor.

Fellow Premier League newcomers Hull City were also interested in the player, according to BBC Sport, but Ipswich won the race.

Luis made his Burnley debut against Liverpool last September and went on to feature heavily across the season. Before arriving in England, he was part of a successful era at Benfica, helping the Lisbon club win Portugal's Primeira Liga in 2019 and 2023, and the Portuguese League Cup in 2025. He has been capped by Portugal at every youth level from Under-15 to Under-21.

The five-year deal signals a long-term commitment from both player and club. Ipswich announced the signing on their official website on 4 August (Ipswich Town FC), tying Luis to Portman Road well into the next decade.
