Riot Games' trading card game Riftbound will eventually include every champion from League of Legends, game director Dave Guskin told GameSpot in an interview at Gen Con on 4 August 2026.

That is a roster of over 170 characters. League of Legends, the multiplayer online game that spawned Riftbound, has spent more than a decade adding playable champions — the distinct heroes and villains players pick at the start of each match. Guskin's promise, made to interviewer Jessica Cogswell, means the card game's pool will eventually mirror the video game's full line-up, though no timeline was given for completing that roster.

Riftbound launched in English late last year and has become one of the most popular trading card games to date, according to GameSpot. At this year's Gen Con — the tabletop gaming convention held annually in Indianapolis — the game had two large booths on the show floor, a visible bet on the in-person play that card games still depend on.

Picking which champions make it onto cards is not purely a popularity contest. Guskin said the selection process combines how often players choose a character in League of Legends with how well that character's abilities translate into card mechanics. Master Yi, for example, made his second playable Riftbound appearance in the game's third set, called Unleashed, which introduced a new XP mechanic — a system that lets cards gain experience over the course of a match, echoing the levelling that defines the video game. Upcoming sixth and seventh sets will bring characters such as Aurelion Sol, a cosmic dragon long requested by fans.

The roadmap beyond 2026 is already taking shape. On 3 August 2026, Riftbound announced a February 2027 release for its next major product: four new decks under the banner "Champions in Legacy," containing 264 cards, 67 of them in the premium Showcase treatment. That announcement came as part of the game's first State of the Game presentation, a format the team is using to lay out set schedules and product plans directly to players. An August 2026 State of the Game, published the same day, added details on organised tournament play for 2027 and the European Regional Championship.

The team has been working well ahead. As of the February 2026 State of the Game, developers had finished design on that year's sets and were already building content slated for 2027 and beyond.

For fans of League of Legends who have picked up Riftbound, the message from Gen Con is straightforward: keep collecting. Every character from the video game is on the way — eventually.
