Ted Lasso Season 4: A Soft Reboot Arrives on Apple TV+

Ted Lasso returns to Apple TV+ for a fourth season on August 5, 2026, ending a three-year gap after the season 3 finale "So Long, Farewell," which aired in 2023. The new season runs 10 episodes: one debuts on August 5, with the rest rolling out weekly every Wednesday. Season 4 operates as a soft reboot: it keeps the show's core characters but introduces a largely new cast and a new team. The story picks up the thread from the end of season 3, when Rebecca, Keeley, and Higgins were planning a women's football club. Ted (Jason Sudeikis) has returned to Kansas City and is working part-time at a grocery store, a choice built around spending more time with his son. The premiere opens in Kansas City, with Rebecca, Keeley, and Higgins traveling there to recruit Ted as head coach of the new women's team. Ted's decision to accept the role unfolds across the full premiere episode before the show shifts back to England. The cast turnover is significant. Former fan favorites Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster), Sam Obisanya (Toheeb Jimoh), and Dani Rojas (Cristo Fernández) are absent aside from brief mentions. The team Ted coaches is entirely new to the series. On the coaching staff, Tanya Reynolds joins as Alice, a new assistant coach whose stern manner is a deliberate counterweight to Ted's optimism. Apple built considerable promotional infrastructure around the return. An official trailer arrived on July 28, 2026, alongside a press release announcing a world premiere event. The structural choices in season 4 are worth examining for what they signal about how streaming platforms manage franchises. By keeping the Rebecca-Keeley-Higgins-Ted core while swapping out nearly the entire supporting roster, Apple and the production team are betting that the show's value lives in its central relationships and tone rather than in the AFC Richmond ensemble that carried seasons 1 through 3. The shift to a women's second-division side also redirects the competitive and dramatic context entirely, freeing the writers from the continuity obligations of the Premier League arc while keeping the Richmond setting as an anchor.

The decision to set the premiere in Kansas City and spend a full episode on Ted's recruitment is a pacing choice that mirrors the original series premiere, which similarly delayed Ted's arrival at Richmond. Whether the soft-reboot formula sustains audience attachment across a largely unfamiliar cast is the central question the five episodes provided to press were presumably designed to let reviewers begin answering.

In my view, the reboot strategy is a pragmatic one. Streaming platforms have repeatedly struggled to extend successful series past their natural narrative endpoints, either by forcing contrived continuations or by launching spinoffs that lose the original's gravitational pull. Ted Lasso's approach, splitting the difference by keeping its emotional center intact while rebuilding the world around it, at least avoids the worst of both patterns. The early evidence from the Kansas City-set premiere, with its deliberate echo of the show's origin story, suggests the writers are aware of the risk and are addressing it structurally rather than ignoring it. Whether that awareness translates into execution across the full ten-episode run is something viewers will begin to judge on August 5.
