WestEnd Films has taken on international sales for The Life and Deaths of Wilson Shedd, a prison-set drama written, directed and produced by Tim Blake Nelson, starring Amanda Seyfried and Scoot McNairy. The London-based sales and financing company will launch the title to international buyers at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival, where the film will have its world premiere in the Gala Presentations programme (Variety).

Inspired by true events, the film follows Karen (Seyfried), an English teacher trapped in an abusive marriage who takes a job at a maximum-security prison in Oklahoma. There she forms an intense connection with Wilson Shedd (McNairy), a student in her class. Nelson also appears on screen in the film, alongside Wunmi Mosaku, Missi Pyle, William Jackson Harper, Elizabeth Marvel, Grant Harvey and Devyn A. Tyler (Variety).

The domestic rights — covering the United States and Canada — are co-represented by WME, V42 and D Squared Films, while WestEnd handles the rest of the world. That split is standard in the independent film market: one team sells North America, another sells foreign territories, and a festival premiere is the shop window for both (Variety).

Nelson produces alongside Julie Buck, Ryan Bartecki, Miles David Romney and Billy Hines. The production companies include Nelson's own Red Barn Films, Co Created Media, V42 Fund, QWGmire and Story Mill Entertainment. Executive producers are Christopher Hines, Gary Levinsohn, Molly C. Nelson is best known to general audiences as an actor — his roles range from O Brother, Where Art Thou? to The Ballad of Buster Scruggs — but he has directed across film and theatre for decades, including The Grey Zone and Eye of God. The Life and Deaths of Wilson Shedd adds another credit to a directing career that has long gravitated toward morally tangled, character-driven material.

Seyfried, an Academy Award nominee for Mank, takes on a role that pairs her with McNairy, whose recent work includes Narcos: Mexico and Blonde. The cast mix of established names and accomplished character actors gives the sales team a recognisable package to present to international distributors.

TIFF's 51st edition runs in September 2026, when the industry's buyers, programmers and press will get their first look at Nelson's latest behind the camera.
