Ana Gasteyer will play her final performance as Mildred Layton in the Broadway musical Schmigadoon! on Sunday, September 6, Deadline reported.

No replacement for Gasteyer has been announced.

Gasteyer plays the villainous preacher's wife Mildred Layton — a role that earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical. She performed her nominated song, "Tribulation," on The Tonight Show in June (Playbill).

The show she is leaving is in strong shape. Schmigadoon! opened April 20, 2026, at the Nederlander Theatre and won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Original Score, and Best Orchestrations. The production, from Saturday Night Live's Lorne Michaels and based on the Apple Original series, is scheduled to run through January 3, 2027 (Playbill). That means the show has roughly four more months of scheduled performances after Gasteyer departs.

On Broadway, cast changes are routine business. A limited run — meaning a performer signed for a set period rather than an open-ended contract — comes with an end date from the start. What follows is the question producers now face: whether a name replacement helps sustain ticket sales, or whether the show, as a Tony-winning Best Musical, draws well enough on its own.

Gasteyer has spoken openly about what the role has meant to her. In May, she told Broadway.com that after 25 years in theater, she finally felt embraced by Broadway through Schmigadoon! (Broadway.com). A former Saturday Night Live cast member, Gasteyer has been a recognizable face in the production — the kind of performer whose name on a marquee can move tickets, what the box office calls a star vehicle.

The rest of the company remains in place. Schmigadoon! stars Alex Brightman and Sara Chase as Josh Skinner and Melissa Gimble, with a cast that includes Ann Harada, Brad Oscar, Isabelle McCalla, Ivan Hernandez, Maulik Pancholy, Max Clayton, McKenzie Kurtz, and Ayaan Diop (Deadline).

For ticket buyers holding seats for performances after September 6, Gasteyer's departure does not affect the show itself — same score, same book, same production. What changes is who stands in the pulpit as Mildred Layton, and whoever steps in will be filling a Tony-nominated role in a Tony-winning show.
