The NWSL will open its 2027 season on 11 February — the earliest start in the league's history — with Angel City hosting a match in Los Angeles on the same weekend that Super Bowl LXI descends on the same city. That is no accident. Commissioner Jessica Berman said the league chose the Los Angeles opener deliberately, aiming to ride the wave of football attention already focused on the city. The Super Bowl airs on ESPN, which is also an NWSL media partner, and the two organisations will work together on coverage that weekend The Guardian.

A week earlier, on 6 February, the Challenge Cup gets things started — a one-off match between the reigning league champion and the team that finished top of the regular-season table, known as the Shield winner. The venue for that match is still to be decided. Each team will play a 30-game regular season, running from that opening weekend through to Decision Day on 31 October, when all the league's final fixtures kick off simultaneously and the playoff picture is settled.

Then comes the summer pause. The league will shut down for seven weeks to cover the Women's World Cup, which runs from 24 June to 25 July in Brazil — the longest mid-season break the NWSL has built into its calendar. A collective bargaining agreement also guarantees players a week off during the week of 7–13 June NWSL. The playoffs follow in the first two weekends of November, and the championship match is set for 20 November.

This is a different approach to the last World Cup summer. In 2023, the NWSL paused regular-season play for five weeks but kept going with the Challenge Cup, which was then an in-season group tournament rather than a single showcase match. This time, the league is clearing the decks entirely.

The 2027 calendar also reflects how quickly the league has grown. Since 2023, the NWSL has expanded from 12 teams to 16, and its overall regular-season match count has jumped from 132 to 240. Four more clubs means more fixtures, more rivalry weeks, and more nights when the table can swing.

For fans, the most visible change is that earlier February start. The league has always played a spring-to-autumn schedule, and it will continue to do so through at least 2030 — a board vote on switching to a autumn-to-spring calendar was postponed in April 2026. By contrast, Major League Soccer, the men's top flight, is running a shortened 14-game sprint season from February to May 2027 before beginning its own move to a autumn-to-spring rhythm in mid-to-late July. The two leagues, which have often shared stadiums and cities, will operate on fundamentally different timelines for the foreseeable future.

What makes the 2027 schedule feel distinct is the way the NWSL is leaning into the biggest moments rather than avoiding them. Opening during Super Bowl week, going quiet for an entire World Cup, and finishing with a November title match — it is a calendar that treats the global game as an ally, not a rival for attention.
