Everton have signed Denmark midfielder Christian Norgaard from Arsenal on a two-year contract for a fee of around £7 million, the club confirmed on 5 August (BBC Sport).

The 32-year-old moves to Merseyside just a year after arriving at Arsenal from Brentford in a £15 million deal. His time in north London was brief: 20 appearances across all competitions last season, only seven of them in the Premier League. Arsenal went on to win their first league title in 22 years, but Norgaard was a peripheral figure in that triumph — a squad player rather than a regular starter.

He was left out of the Arsenal squad for a friendly against Real Betis last week, a clear signal that his future lay elsewhere. The agreement in principle between the two clubs was first reported in early August (The Athletic; Yahoo Sports).

For Everton, this is the latest move in a busy summer under manager David Moyes. The Scot has been openly seeking experienced reinforcements following the departures of Seamus Coleman and Idrissa Gueye — two midfield and defensive stalwarts whose combined service to the club spans well over a decade. Norgaard, who captained Brentford across six years and 196 appearances before his switch to Arsenal, brings exactly the kind of tested leadership Moyes is after.

He is not the only midfield arrival. Everton have also signed Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough for £16.5 million, a 23-year-old central midfielder who made his name in the Championship, England's second tier. Add the £18 million capture of 20-year-old winger Tyrique George from Chelsea — who spent the second half of last season on loan at Goodison Park — and Moyes is reshaping his squad with a blend of youth and experience.

There is an urgency to the business. Midfielder James Garner is set to miss the start of the new season after groin surgery, leaving a gap in the engine room that Norgaard and Hackney will be expected to fill. Everton begin their Premier League campaign against Crystal Palace at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday, 22 August.

For Arsenal, the deal represents a tidy piece of business on paper — recouping roughly half of what they paid for a player who featured sparingly in a title-winning campaign. The reigning champions have already reinforced their midfield this summer with Martin Zubimendi, signed alongside Norgaard and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga for the club's Asia Tour last summer, and Mikel Arteta's squad depth remains among the strongest in the division.

Norgaard's challenge now is to rediscover the form that made him a pillar of Brentford's rise. At 32, he is not a long-term investment. He is a short-term solution to a specific problem — and Everton need him to hit the ground running.
