Neil Peart Documentary Featuring Rush Bandmates and Guest Drummers to Debut on CBC This September

A new documentary about late Rush drummer Neil Peart will debut on Canada's CBC network on 23 September, as part of the broadcaster's fall 2026 schedule and the long-running documentary series The Passionate Eye (Rolling Stone; Lethbridge Herald).
Titled Neil Peart: No One's Disciple, the film was produced by Banger Films and features interviews with Rush co-founders Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson — the bassist/vocalist and guitarist who stood alongside Peart for the entirety of the band's five-decade run (The Q; Rolling Stone).
Peart joined Rush in 1974 and became one of the most studied rock drummers of his generation, renowned for a technically demanding style built on intricate time signatures and orchestral-scale drum kits. He died of cancer in January 2020 at the age of 67 (Rolling Stone).
The documentary's most attention-grabbing element is musical rather than biographical. Lee and Lifeson filmed rehearsal-hall performances of classic Rush songs with three guest drummers: Stewart Copeland of The Police, Red Hot Chili Peppers' Chad Smith, and Tool's Danny Carey (Rolling Stone).
The pair had shared a stage with Smith and Carey before — at a Taylor Hawkins tribute concert in 2022 — but had never performed with Copeland until these sessions. Copeland, who was a close personal friend of Peart, is among the drummers most often mentioned in the same breath as the Rush man when the conversation turns to rock players who treated the kit as a compositional instrument (Rolling Stone).
For Peart enthusiasts, the Carey connection runs deeper still. A video from 2011 shows Carey, Peart, Copeland and Primus bassist Les Claypool together in a recording studio, a meeting of players rarely captured in the same room (Consequence of Sound). Carey had also paid public tribute to Peart at a Tool concert in San Diego in January 2020, days after Peart's death was publicly announced (Ultimate Classic Rock; Consequence of Sound).
Lee and Lifeson are not waiting for the broadcast to keep Peart's music on stage. The two are currently touring with drummer Anika Nilles, with each concert on the tour featuring multiple tributes to Peart (Rolling Stone).
Neil Peart: No One's Disciple airs 23 September on CBC as part of The Passionate Eye (Exclaim!; Lethbridge Herald).
