Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir is treating Saturday's clash with Melbourne at the MCG as just another game, even with the minor premiership on the line and September's finals series fast approaching.

The Dockers sit on top of the ladder and can all but seal the minor premiership — the award for finishing first after the home-and-away rounds — with a win this weekend. But Longmuir said he is not buying into the idea that a Saturday afternoon at the MCG is a grand-final dress rehearsal. "I don't get caught up in dress rehearsals," he said. ABC News

The comparison is tempting, though. The game is scheduled for 1:15pm Saturday; the Grand Final starts at 2:30pm. Same venue, similar conditions, same stakes that will define the Dockers' season if they get there. Longmuir was having none of it, saying it would be disrespectful to Melbourne to look past this contest toward September.

The MCG has been rare territory for Fremantle under Longmuir, who took over ahead of the 2020 season. Since then, the Dockers have played at the ground just 12 times — a byproduct of being based in Perth, more than 3,000 kilometres away. Longmuir said the club does not see the trip as a burden, noting that Fremantle visits Melbourne nearly every second week during the season. ABC News

Fremantle did get a taste of an MCG escape recently, edging Collingwood by a single point at the ground in Round 19. That result, and a one-point win over the Western Bulldogs last weekend, have the Dockers on the verge of securing top spot — the first minor premiership in the club's history. On the question of resting players before finals, Longmuir confirmed Fremantle had no plans to sit large numbers out, following a warning from the AFL to clubs about managing their lists in the run home. Longmuir also addressed the possibility of losing assistant coach Jaymie Graham, who has reportedly advanced to the final round of interviews for both the vacant Essendon and Carlton head-coaching roles. Longmuir said he was confident Graham would not be distracted by the external interest.
