Guild Wars 3 Confirms Four Playable Species at Launch, Including a New Bear-Like People

ArenaNet has confirmed that four species will be playable when Guild Wars 3 launches, naming three of them in a developer blog post published on the game's official website on 6 August 2026.
Humans and Asura — small, large-eyed scholars who have appeared in both prior Guild Wars games — will return as playable species. The Kodan, a bear-like people, will be playable for the first time in the franchise's history. The fourth species has not yet been announced (Eurogamer, 6 August 2026).
For context, Guild Wars 2 has carried the same five playable races since its release in 2012. The sequel's launch roster of four is smaller, but ArenaNet said the game is being built so that more species can be added after launch rather than locked in at release.
The developer blog, titled "Our Approach to Playable Species in Guild Wars 3," also drew some lines. A species with an extreme body silhouette — the post named the Forgotten, a four-armed, serpentine people — would not be viable, because the amount of custom development work required to support such a body across all of the game's armour, animations and interactions would be too great.
ArenaNet also said that no playable species will grant a tangible gameplay advantage over another. Species choice will exist purely for player expression, meaning the decision is about how you want to look in the world, not which set of stats or abilities you gain.
More information on each species will start arriving the week of 10 August, according to the same blog post.
Coverage of the announcement has not been entirely uniform. GamesHub reported on 5 August that ArenaNet had confirmed four playable races: Human, Asura, Kodan, and an unnamed fourth (GamesHub, 5 August 2026). An mmos.com article published on 6 August, titled "Guild Wars 3 Playable Races: What's Actually Confirmed," argued that ArenaNet had not confirmed the playable races at all, contradicting other outlets' coverage (mmos.com, 6 August 2026). The developer blog post itself, hosted on the official Guild Wars 3 website, does name Humans, Asura and Kodan while leaving the fourth unannounced.
For fans, the takeaway is straightforward: three of four launch species are now public, a brand-new option is joining the roster, and the rest of the details are coming soon. The design philosophy — species as expression, not power — tells players that their choice of character will be about identity rather than optimisation. And the promise of post-launch additions means the roster at release is a starting point, not a final count.
