Micah Curtis Sykes, the 31-year-old son of Grammy-nominated opera singer Jubilant Sykes, pleaded not guilty on August 6, 2026 to one felony count of murder with a special allegation of using a deadly weapon, according to Rolling Stone.

Jubilant Sykes, 71, was found fatally stabbed at the family's home in Santa Monica, California in December 2025. Prosecutors say his son murdered him using a dagger, garden shears, and a barbell. An autopsy report detailed that the elder Sykes was stabbed at least 73 times, the Mercury News reported. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim's wife, who is also the defendant's mother, was home at the time and called 911. Micah Sykes was arrested at the scene and has been held in custody without bail since December, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman commented on the case on the day of the plea, mourning the loss of Jubilant Sykes.

Rolling Stone also reported that a California woman obtained a restraining order against Micah Curtis Sykes in October 2017, after a hearing in which she accused him of threatening behaviour.

Along with the murder charge, Micah Sykes faces a count of infliction of injury on an elder or dependent adult, the Los Angeles Times reported. If convicted as charged, he faces up to life in state prison.

Jubilant Sykes was a celebrated baritone whose career crossed classical, gospel, and musical theatre stages. He performed as the Celebrant in the Grammy-nominated 2009 recording of Leonard Bernstein's Mass with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra under conductor Marin Alsop. His work earned him a wide following across genres rarely combined in a single career.
