Chris Stapleton walked into a Guns N' Roses concert in Toronto and walked out having traded verses with Axl Rose. During the band's show at Rogers Stadium on Wednesday, 5 August, the country singer made a surprise cameo, joining Guns N' Roses to perform Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" (Billboard, 2026-08-06).

Stapleton exchanged lines with Rose while playing rhythm guitar, slotting in alongside Slash, Duff McKagan and the rest of the band. Live Nation, the tour's promoter, posted video of the moment on its official Facebook page and described it as "a historic moment" (Live Nation Facebook, 2026-08-06).

The song choice carries its own layered history. Dylan wrote and recorded "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" for the 1973 film Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid; his version peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 — the magazine's flagship singles chart — and spent 16 weeks on it. Guns N' Roses covered the track on their 1991 album Use Your Illusion II, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the magazine's album chart. The band's version did not enter the Hot 100 but reached No. 18 on the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, which tracks radio plays at rock-formatted stations (Billboard, 2026-08-06).

The collaboration did not come from nowhere. In July 2016, shortly after releasing his debut album Traveller, Stapleton opened for the reunited Guns N' Roses at Nashville's Nissan Stadium. More recently, Slash invited Stapleton to sing on a track for Orgy of the Damned, the guitarist's 2024 blues covers album. That record debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Blues Albums chart and held the position for 12 weeks (Billboard, 2026-08-06).

Guns N' Roses themselves split in 1996 and reunited in 2016 for the Not in This Lifetime Tour, which ran until 2019. The band has continued to tour since.

Stapleton was already booked in Toronto for the following night. According to his official tour page, he headlined his own show at Rogers Stadium on 6 August, with Zach Top and Allen Stone as special guests. For one night, though, the country star and the hard-rock band shared a stage in a stadium they were both booked to fill. The Dylan cover they chose — a song already passed from one artist to another for more than half a century — picked up another set of voices.
