Take-Two Defends GTA 6's $80 Price Tag as 'Phenomenal Value' Ahead of November Launch

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick called Grand Theft Auto 6's US$80 price tag "an incredible bargain" while speaking to investors on August 7, 2026, following the company's fiscal first-quarter 2027 earnings report. Most of Take-Two's games sell for US$70. GTA 6 is one of a handful of titles that will retail for the higher figure.
GTA 6 launches on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, according to GameSpot. The game is being developed by Rockstar Games, the studio behind the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption series and one of three labels — alongside 2K and Zynga — through which Take-Two publishes its products.
Zelnick's defence of the price rested on two arguments. First, that the real cost of making a top-tier video game — the category the industry calls AAA, typically large-budget productions from major publishers — is lower today than it was 20 years ago, while retail prices have not kept pace with inflation. Second, that Rockstar has a track record of delivering more content and polish than players expect. "Our goal is to deliver way more value to consumers than what we charge," Zelnick said, calling the game "phenomenal value" (GameSpot).
The comments came on the same day Take-Two reported financial results for the three months ending June 30, 2026. The New York-based publisher posted net bookings — a measure of revenue that counts digital and physical sales when the money is spent rather than when the product ships — of US$1.39 billion, slightly above the company's own guidance range (Take-Two Investor Relations).
Take-Two is counting on GTA 6 to lift revenue significantly during its current financial year, which runs through March 2027. In May 2026, the company set an initial full-year net bookings outlook of US$8.0 billion to US$8.2 billion, a figure an executive described as representing record bookings and meaningful growth over the prior year (Take-Two Investor Relations). The company's stock trades on NASDAQ under the ticker TTWO.
The path to a November launch has not been straight. Take-Two originally expected GTA 6 to release in autumn 2025, then delayed it to May 2026, a move Reuters reported on May 2, 2025, when shares tumbled roughly 8% in early trading (Reuters). The release has since moved again to the current November 19 date.
For players, the price conversation is the one that lands closest to home. A US$80 sticker places GTA 6 above the US$70 ceiling that became the industry norm for new releases on current-generation consoles. Whether Zelnick's argument — that inflation-adjusted game prices have lagged, and that Rockstar's output justifies a premium — resonates with buyers will be settled not in earnings calls but at the till on November 19.
In the meantime, Take-Two has other irons heating up. The publisher revealed NBA 2K27's cover athletes on July 22, 2026: Victor Wembanyama, Caitlin Clark, and Derrick Rose. The basketball simulator, part of Take-Two's 2K label, is a consistent revenue driver between Grand Theft Auto releases.
