Disney Plus Is Testing an AI Tool That Understands What You Mean, Not Just What You Type

Disney is testing an AI-powered recommendation tool for Disney Plus that takes natural-language search, voice queries, or suggested prompts and produces a customized row of show and movie recommendations. The company calls it a "limited beta experiment" available to a "small group of select subscribers," with the goal of recommending content that "fits the moment" (The Verge).
The Disney Plus tool is not an isolated experiment. Disney is also introducing an "AI-assisted" conversational search experience for ESPN, called ESPN Search, now in beta with a "subset" of users. ESPN Search lets users ask questions and receive answers, stats, and recommendations "drawn from ESPN's vast sports knowledge ecosystem" (The Verge).
On an earnings call this week, Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro doubled down on plans to make Disney Plus the "digital centerpiece" of the company, citing increased personalization, exclusivity, and benefits for subscribers (The Verge). The AI recommendation and search tests align with that personalization push, extending Disney's streaming interface from passive browse-and-select into intent-driven discovery.
Disney's rivals are on parallel tracks. Netflix has been testing an OpenAI-powered conversational search tool and also offers a native voice search feature. Warner Bros. Discovery announced it is experimenting with a "conversational search experience" for HBO Max. Peacock recently added an AI Andy Cohen that narrates Bravo clips (The Verge). The pattern across the major streamers is consistent: natural-language interfaces layered on top of existing recommendation engines, designed to close the gap between what a viewer wants to watch and what they can actually find.
Disney's AI work in streaming predates these tests. In August 2023, the company created a task force to study artificial intelligence and how it could be applied across the entertainment conglomerate (Reuters). By February 2024, Disney had introduced "Disney's Magic Words," an AI-driven advertising system for Disney Plus and Hulu that uses scene-level metadata — essentially detailed tags describing what is happening on screen — to target ads based on on-screen content and viewer mood (Reuters). "Magic Words" handles monetization. The language expansion broadens the addressable subscriber base. Each layer reinforces the others: better discovery increases engagement, richer metadata improves ad targeting, broader language support grows the audience, and generative tools potentially lower content production costs.
The broader context here is that streaming platforms are running into the limits of traditional recommendation systems. Most streaming services use collaborative filtering — a technique that recommends titles based on what similar viewers have watched. These systems are good at surfacing titles similar to what a user has already watched, but they struggle with what Disney calls the "fits the moment" problem: the viewer who wants something specific but cannot articulate it through genre menus and category browsing. Natural-language search removes that barrier. A query like "something light after a long day" or "a thriller under 90 minutes" maps directly to a curated row without the viewer scrolling endlessly. Whether the underlying models can consistently deliver relevant results from such open-ended prompts, at acceptable response speed, on living-room devices, is the open technical question. The competitive dimension matters too. If conversational search becomes a baseline expectation, the streamer with the best implementation gains a retention edge in a market where churn — viewers cancelling and re-subscribing — remains the central economic challenge. Disney's advantage is the breadth of its content library and the ESPN sports knowledge base, both of which provide rich material for AI-driven recommendation. The risk is that inconsistent or irrelevant results erode trust faster than a mediocre browse-based system, because a failed natural-language query feels like a broken promise in a way that a mediocre "Recommended for You" row does not.
For those familiar with how these systems are built, the technical architecture is recognizable: a large language model processes the user's natural-language query, maps it against a content metadata graph, and returns ranked results rendered as a UI row. The hard parts are the same ones that always challenge recommender systems: difficulty recommending niche or lesser-known content, speed constraints on lower-powered devices, the risk of the model fabricating descriptions of titles, and the need to continuously measure recommendation quality against actual engagement. Disney has not disclosed which models power the Disney Plus tool or ESPN Search, nor whether the same infrastructure underpins both.
