Jean Lodge, the British actor who played Queen Guinevere in the 1954 film The Black Knight, died on Wednesday, 5 August 2026, at the age of 99. Her death was announced on Facebook by her granddaughter, Amy Shaughnessy, who wrote that Jean Margaret Shaughnessy (née Lodge) passed quietly and peacefully in her sleep, one day after her 99th birthday (Deadline, 7 August 2026).

Lodge was born on 4 August 1927 in Hull, England. Her screen career spanned the late 1940s through the mid-1960s, a period when British cinema was churning out costume adventures, comedies and thrillers at a furious pace. Her credits included White Corridors, Brandy for the Parson, and The Hellfire Club (1961), in which she appeared opposite Peter Cushing. She also performed on stage in London's West End during the 1950s.

Her best-remembered role came as Guinevere in The Black Knight, a medieval adventure starring Alan Ladd. The film was a commercial production from Warwick Films, a company that supplied the British market with colourful, action-driven pictures throughout the 1950s.

In 1948, Lodge married Alfred Shaughnessy, who would go on to become the chief writer of Upstairs, Downstairs, the ITV drama about a wealthy London household and its servants that ran from 1971 to 1975 and became one of the most exported British series of its era. They remained married until his death in 2005.

The couple's two sons both built careers in the industry. Charles Shaughnessy is known to American television audiences for playing Shane Donovan on Days of Our Lives and Maxwell Sheffield opposite Fran Drescher on The Nanny (1993–1999); he also appeared as Victor Cassadine on General Hospital. David Shaughnessy has directed episodes of Days of Our Lives, The Young and the Restless, and The Bold and the Beautiful, and has worked as a voice actor on projects including Big Hero 6 and Star Wars Rebels.

For a family whose working lives touched British postwar film, one of the defining British drama series of the 1970s, American daytime television, and prime-time sitcom, Lodge's death closes a chapter that stretches across nearly eight decades of entertainment on both sides of the Atlantic. She was 99.
