Bella Thorne will write, direct, and star in Spring Breakers 2, stepping into the director's chair on the sequel to Harmony Korine's 2012 cult crime drama, according to Deadline.

Thorne revealed the news on the Call Her Daddy podcast during an interview with host Alex Cooper. She said the sequel's producers approached her after seeing an early cut of her directorial debut, Color Your Hurt. That film, which Thorne wrapped production on in October 2025, persuaded the producers she could steer the franchise's next instalment herself.

The job is a step up from Thorne's previous attachment to the project. In May 2025, she was cast as a performer in the sequel — then titled Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain — alongside Ariel Martin, Grace Van Dien, and True Whitaker, with Matthew Bright set to direct, Deadline reported. Thorne now replaces Bright as both writer and director, making Spring Breakers 2 her sophomore feature behind the camera, per The Playlist.

The original Spring Breakers, released in 2012, starred James Franco, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, Vanessa Hudgens, and Rachel Korine. The film followed a group of college friends whose Florida spring break descends into crime, and it became a cult favourite — a film that earns a passionate, lasting following rather than a mass audience at release.

Thorne's path to the sequel has been unusually fast. Color Your Hurt has not yet been released publicly, yet an early cut was enough to convince the producers to hand her full creative control of a known property. Few film-makers land a franchise sequel as their second directing credit; fewer still do it before their first film reaches audiences.

No production start date, additional cast, or release window for Spring Breakers 2 has been announced.
