Ferrand-Prévot, who won the 2025 edition, had been one of the race's headline figures. Her departure stripped the peloton — the main pack of riders — of one of its biggest names with two stages remaining.

At the front, the overall standings remained knife-edge tight. Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney held the yellow jersey (worn by the race leader) with a total time of 24 hours, 7 minutes and 34 seconds after stage seven. Demi Vollering sat second, just 15 seconds behind — a margin that could vanish on a single climb or crosswind section. Marlen Reusser was third, 39 seconds off the pace letourfemmes.fr.

Stage eight covered 171.9 kilometres, making it the longest day of the nine-day race. Organisers classified it as flat, but the route packed 1,420 metres of climbing, including two category-four ascents before the finish along the Nice seafront letourfemmes.fr. The stage was scheduled to start at 13:40 CET and finish around 17:43 CET Cyclingnews.

The race began on 1 August in Lausanne, Switzerland, and has travelled south through eastern France across nine stages. Stage seven finished atop Mont Ventoux on 7 August, one of the most storied climbs in cycling. The final day, stage nine, runs from Nice to Nice — a 99.2-kilometre mountain loop with 2,100 metres of elevation gain that will decide the yellow jersey letourfemmes.fr.

In the other classifications, Lorena Wiebes led the green jersey (points) competition with 147 points. Puck Pieterse topped the mountains classification with 55 points. Antonia Niedermaier held the white jersey as best young rider, and UAE Team ADQ led the team standings letourfemmes.fr.

For neutral fans, the appeal is simple. Niewiadoma-Phinney and Vollering are separated by 15 seconds — less than the time a rider can lose on a single badly timed climb. Tomorrow's mountain loop above Nice will settle it.
