Demi Vollering won stage 8 of the 2026 Tour de France Femmes on Saturday, August 8, seizing the overall lead from Kasia Niewiadoma by eight seconds with a single stage remaining (The Guardian).

Riding for the French team FDJ United-Suez, Vollering launched her decisive attack on the final climb of the Cote de la Ginistiere, then extended her advantage on the descent to the Promenade des Anglais in Nice. The stage win — her fifth in the Tour de France Femmes and her fifth day in the yellow jersey — turned the race on its head with 121 kilometres of racing left to decide everything.

The general classification — the overall standings that determine the winner — now reads: Vollering first at 28h 10' 18", Niewiadoma second at +8 seconds, Marlen Reusser (Movistar) third at +1'12", and Elisa Longo Borghini (UAE Team ADQ) fourth at +3'05" (letourfemmes.fr). Eight seconds is a knife-edge. Every cobblestone and roundabout in the final stage could matter.

Stage 8 from Sisteron to Nice, run in 4h 02' 39", had started with a two-rider breakaway. Maeva Squiban, winner of two stages in the previous year's race, crashed on a left-hand bend descending the Cote de Colomars and was swallowed by the peloton — the main pack of riders. Loes Adegeest pressed on alone but was caught nine kilometres from the finish as Vollering's team attacked the bends leading to the Ginistiere. Adegeest's effort earned her the combativity prize for the stage.

The final stage, also based in Nice, takes in four climbs of the Col d'Eze overlooking the corniche roads of Villefranche-sur-Mer. It is a parcours — a race route — that rewards aggressive riding and punishes tired legs. Vollering said she would do everything in her power to keep the yellow jersey.

Behind the racing, a bitter dispute flared. Niewiadoma accused Vollering's teammate Celia Gery of deliberately blocking her against the barriers on the climb, saying she had lost respect for the team over the incident. Race commissaires — the officials who enforce the rules — studied the alleged blocking at length after the stage. Vollering said she did not see it and defended Gery, saying she believed her teammate had not done it on purpose.

What gives this duel its edge is history. The Vollering-Niewiadoma rivalry dates to the 2024 Tour de France Femmes, when Vollering lost to Niewiadoma by four seconds at Alpe d'Huez — the narrowest margin of defeat in the history of any Tour de France, men's or women's. Vollering also won the race outright in 2023. Last year, Pauline Ferrand-Prévot took the title on the final climb of the Col de la Madeleine. This time, Ferrand-Prévot's title defence unravelled early: she lost time in the stage four time trial, on Mont Brouilly, and on Mont Ventoux, where Vollering's repeated accelerations made her crack.

In the other classifications, Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime) leads the points standings with 164. Puck Pieterse (Fenix-Deceuninck) tops the mountains classification with 55 points. Antonia Niedermaier (Canyon//SRAM) leads the young rider category. UAE Team ADQ heads the team classification.
