Mount injury overshadows United's draw with reigning European champions PSG
Manchester United drew 1-1 with Paris Saint-Germain in a pre-season friendly in Gothenburg on 8 August 2026, but a foot injury to Mason Mount before the 20-minute mark left a far deeper impression than the scoreline.
PSG, the reigning European champions, needed barely two minutes to take the lead. Ibrahim Mbaye found the net inside 120 seconds, capitalising on a sluggish United start and immediately testing the resolve of Michael Carrick's side. United responded well. In the 32nd minute, Amad Diallo won the ball back high up the pitch and fed Bryan Mbeumo, who slotted home the equaliser — a goal born of pressing, the high-energy defensive tactic where forwards chase the ball deep in the opponent's half.
The real story, though, was Mount. The 27-year-old pointed to his left foot as he walked off, replaced by Tyler Fletcher (Manchester United official website). Mount joined United from Chelsea in 2023 and has since been restricted to 54 league appearances across three seasons, many of them as a substitute (The Guardian). Every pre-season carries the hope that this will be the campaign his body finally cooperates. This was not the start he needed.
There was later encouragement. Mount appeared to allay fears of a serious injury, according to Metro (Metro), though the extent of the problem will only become clear after assessment.
United's bad luck with injuries did not stop at Mount. Tom Heaton, the 40-year-old goalkeeper, suffered a right hamstring strain early in the second half while rushing out to make a clearance. Heaton pulled up clutching the back of his leg and had to come off. The Athletic's live blog described both Mount's and Heaton's departures as the obvious negatives for Carrick from an otherwise useful workout (The Athletic).
The match had its flashpoints beyond the injuries. PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov clattered into Joshua Zirkzee outside the penalty area — an offence that, in a competitive fixture, would typically bring a red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. He escaped without punishment and walked off to jeers from the crowd.
For Carrick, the fixture offered a first real look at new signing Youri Tielemans, who arrived from Aston Villa this summer, against the side currently sitting atop European football. A 1-1 draw against the continent's champions is a respectable result. Two injuries to key squad members is not.
United have two more friendlies before the real business begins — Leeds in Dublin on 12 August, then AC Milan in Wroclaw on 15 August. The Premier League campaign opens away to newly promoted Hull on 22 August. Carrick will hope both Mount and Heaton are available by then. For a squad trying to build momentum, losing bodies in August is the last thing anyone needs.
