Huddersfield Giants see off Barrow Raiders to kick-start Shield campaign
Barrow Raiders struck first but could not hold the line, as Huddersfield Giants ran in seven tries to win 36-20 in the Betfred Women's Super League Shield at Laund Hill.
The round-eight fixture on Sunday 9 August marked the opening of the Shield stage for both sides — the phase of the season where the ten-team competition splits into two groups, with results determining who pushes for the top flight and who faces a relegation/promotion play-off (BBC Sport).
For Huddersfield, the urgency was clear. They needed wins quickly to avoid being dragged into that relegation/promotion play-off, and a home fixture against a winless Barrow side represented exactly the sort of opportunity they could not afford to squander.
It did not start to plan. Emma Hutchinson dotted down in the corner to give the Raiders a surprise early lead, momentarily silencing the home crowd. Barrow, promoted to the Women's Super League in 2021, have found life at this level uncompromising (Barrow Raiders).
The response was immediate and devastating. Maddie Clegg gathered the ball deep in her own half and went the length of the field to level the scores — a try that shifted the momentum firmly in Huddersfield's favour. Liv Gale then charged down the blindside — the narrow side of the pitch, where fewer defenders wait — to put the Giants ahead. Amy Bennett found a gap in the defensive line for a third, and when Barrow knocked on (lost the ball forward) just before half-time, Sam Hulme went over untouched to open a commanding lead.
Clegg added her second after the break, and Hulme completed a hat-trick as Huddersfield's attacking fluency overwhelmed a tiring Barrow defence. Grady kicked four goals to keep the scoreboard ticking.
Barrow refused to fold. Temple, Clough and Dobson all crossed for tries, with Stewart adding two goals, but the deficit was too large to close. The Raiders left Laund Hill with their search for a first win of the campaign extended into the remaining Shield rounds.
For Huddersfield, the result is a foundation rather than a statement. The Shield stage is about accumulating enough victories to secure safety and, ideally, a path toward the top group — something the club has tasted before, having won the BWSL Shield Final in October 2021 (Barrow Raiders).
Barrow, coached by Amanda Wilkinson (Barrow Raiders), face a sterner test next. A return fixture against Huddersfield is scheduled for 30 August, according to Sky Sports listings (Sky Sports). Between now and then, Wilkinson needs to find a way to turn competitive passages into a full eighty-minute performance.
Huddersfield's task is simpler to state if not to execute: build on this, collect points, and climb clear of danger.
