Letterboxd Goes Dark: Server Outage Locks Out Millions of Film Fans Worldwide
Letterboxd, the film-rating and review platform with more than 30 million users worldwide, went offline on Sunday, August 9, 2026, after a server outage logged everyone out of their accounts. As of 10:50 p.m. PT that same night, the service had still not been restored, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The company first acknowledged the problem just before 6:30 a.m. PT on its X account, writing, "Hang in there. Our team is aware of an outage affecting service and is working to restore access as soon as possible." Later in the day, Letterboxd posted an update on X: "We're still working to resolve the outage affecting our service. Thanks for bearing with us while we work to get things back up and running."
Users who attempted to sign back in were met with a blunt error message: "The server returned an error. Please try again later." The platform's website replaced its usual interface with a photo of Robert De Niro in Martin Scorsese's 1980 film Raging Bull and the text, "We're taking a short break between rounds. Letterboxd is offline due to a server outage. We'll be back soon!" The company also posted on Instagram that its team was aware of the outage and working to restore access.
Launched in 2011, Letterboxd has grown into a central hub for film enthusiasts — a place where users rate, review, and catalogue films, build watchlists, and follow each other's viewing habits. For a platform of its scale, a full outage lasting more than 16 hours is unusual but not unprecedented. During a previous incident in 2024, Letterboxd was down for more than six hours before the company confirmed service was restored, Variety reported at the time.
According to IBTimes, citing tracked incident history from the monitoring service StatusGator, Letterboxd has faced several outages and login problems throughout 2026, suggesting the platform's infrastructure has been under recurring strain.
For now, there is no announced timeline for recovery. Letterboxd operates a support centre at support.letterboxd.com, though with the platform itself offline, users are limited to checking the company's social media accounts for updates. The outage leaves millions of film fans without their preferred space to log, rate, and argue about what they have been watching — a Sunday night without a place to put the weekend's viewings on record.
