Bill Maher's Ariana Grande Weight Joke Bombs on 'Real Time' — as the Singer Prepares to Step Back From the Spotlight

Bill Maher opened a Friday episode of HBO's Real Time with a joke about Ariana Grande's weight, and the studio audience let him hear it.
During his monologue, Maher riffed on newly released UFO files and quipped, "Oh, that was just an Ariana Grande video." That line got laughs. Then he followed with: "Maybe that joke will make her eat something." The audience groaned loudly. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the remark landed flat in the room.
The joke lands at a moment when Grande has been openly dealing with exactly that kind of scrutiny. Over the past year, the singer and actor has faced a steady wave of online commentary about her health and body. Last week, her representative shared a statement — first reported by PEOPLE on 1 August and picked up by The Guardian on 3 August — saying Grande will "take a step back from visibility" after her Eternal Sunshine Tour wraps in September.
The statement, shared with The Hollywood Reporter, said Grande will take "a much-deserved break from public-facing work and appearances, which has led to endless, ongoing public scrutiny."
Grande has pushed back on the idea that the decision was impulsive. At a Chicago show, she told the crowd her step back was not reactive but a plan she had quietly made long ago, from what she described as a thoughtful and empowered place.
Maher is no stranger to this territory. In 2019, he argued on Real Time that "fat shaming doesn't need to end; it needs to make a comeback," adding that "some amount of shame is good," as noted by The Hollywood Reporter.
What makes the moment cut through is the timing. A comedian known for defending weight-based jokes takes aim at a singer who has spent a year publicly absorbing commentary about her body, and who has just announced she is walking away from public life partly because of it. The audience's groan was the sound of that collision.
Grande still has tour dates ahead through September. After that, she plans to go quiet.
