Carlton Fans Chant for Fraser as Blues' Coaching Call Looms
Carlton supporters chanted "we want Fraser" across Marvel Stadium after the Blues' 44-point win over St Kilda, and the club hierarchy may answer them within days.
A decision to endorse interim coach Josh Fraser as Carlton's full-time head coach could come as soon as the week of August 10, according to ABC News. Fraser, 43, said he expected to have formal conversations with the club about the role this week, though he had not officially nominated for the vacant position as of August 10.
The numbers tell the story of the turnaround. When Fraser stepped into the interim role in mid-May 2026 after Michael Voss was sacked, Carlton sat at 1-8 and the season looked gone. Since then, Fraser has coached 12 games for 10 wins and two losses. The Blues now sit 10th on the AFL ladder, eight points clear, with games against the Western Bulldogs and Fremantle still to come.
That 10-2 record is why the Marvel Stadium crowd found its voice. The chant erupted during the St Kilda win — a result that pushed Carlton's late-season surge another step forward and put Fraser's case beyond sentiment and into hard results.
Fraser has spent weeks deflecting questions about the permanent role. In late May, he hosed down the talk entirely, insisting he was not ready to be a full-time AFL coach. By late June, with an unbeaten start to his tenure, he was still laughing it off. As recently as August 6, Fraser told ESPN he wanted to make sure he was "all in" before putting his hand up, and planned to make his call after the St Kilda clash.
That clash has now been and gone, and the call appears to be coming.
Voss, the man Fraser replaced, told the AFL in June that he expected Fraser to be put through the formal process to win the job permanently. The Carlton hierarchy then gave Fraser a week to pitch for the role, per AFL.com.au, with that process playing out in late July.
Fraser rejoined Carlton as an assistant coach for the 2026 season after the club announced his return to IKON Park in October 2025, per Carlton Media. He has said previously that he does not put players in the position of discussing his coaching future, telling Carlton Media in late July that he did not think it was fair to talk about that with the playing group.
Half-back Adam Cerra said the players have full faith in the club's process and will support whoever is chosen.
For Carlton fans, the wait may be almost over. A club that was 1-8 and staring at a wasted season now has a coach the supporters are chanting for, a ladder position worth defending, and two games left to make a case for finals. The hierarchy's decision could land this week.
