Kiran Abbavaram Leads Zee Studios' Mythological Epic 'Indraputra', Opening a Planned Universe
Zee Studios has set its next mythological swing: Indraputra, a pan-India action-fantasy starring Kiran Abbavaram, with principal photography scheduled to begin in October and a theatrical release eyed for 2027 (Variety).
Srikanth Puppala directs, making his feature debut after years inside other people's camera units. His credits include the direction teams of Kudi Yedamaithe, Katamarayudu and Gopala Gopala, and most recently he served as first assistant director to Rishab Shetty on Kantara: A Legend — Chapter 1 (Variety). The jump from lieutenant to helmer on a film of this scale is a notable leap.
"Pan-India" means the film is designed to reach audiences across multiple Indian languages simultaneously rather than servicing a single regional market. Indraputra is positioned as the opening chapter of a broader mythological universe, following a template that has become increasingly common in Indian cinema after the crossover success of franchise-builders from the Telugu and Kannada industries.
Zee Studios produces alongside Prerna Arora, with Keerthan co-producing. Arora's credits include Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and Dhundh, and she previously produced Jatadhara for Zee Studios — an existing relationship that likely smoothed the path for this collaboration (Variety).
Abbavaram has been building steadily since his 2019 debut in the romantic comedy Raja Vaaru Rani Gaaru. His 2021 film SR Kalyanamandapam, which he also wrote, expanded his profile; he followed with Sebastian P.C. 524 and Sammathame in 2022, and three releases in 2023 including Vinaro Bhagyamu Vishnu Katha. His most recent films are K-Ramp and Chennai Love Story (Variety). Indraputra is a shift in scale and genre for an actor whose work to date has sat in contemporary romantic and dramatic territory.
The film is in pre-production now, with supporting cast, technical crew and a firm release date to be announced (Variety). A June report placed the theatrical window in 2027 after the October 2026 shoot start (Firstpost).
Indraputra arrives amid a wider rush of Indian mythological-world projects. Ele Animations has launched its Sanatan Universe with Mahaprabhu Jagannath, and Hombale Films with Kleem Productions are building an animated Mahavatar Cinematic Universe — seven features spanning from 2025's Mahavatar Narsimha through 2037, each centred on one of the ten avatars of Vishnu (Variety). The common thread is a bet that audiences will return for connected chapters drawn from shared mythological source material.
For Abbavaram, the role is a chance to step into the kind of large-canvas project that has redefined what a mid-career Indian actor's trajectory can look like. The proof will be on screens in 2027.
