The Major Oak, the ancient pedunculate oak at the heart of Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire, has died — confirmed by experts after the tree failed to produce new leaves in spring 2026. BBC News reported on June 18 that the tree experienced its first spring without any new growth, the clearest botanical indicator that a deciduous tree of its age has reached the end of its life.
The tree is estimated to be approximately 1,200 years old, placing its origins in the early medieval period. CNN first reported the death on June 17. The Guardian, citing it as one of Europe's oldest, largest, and most celebrated ancient trees, covered the story the following day. For much of its life the Major Oak has been the focal point of Sherwood Forest's visitor infrastructure — steel props have supported its sprawling limbs for well over a century, and access around its base has long been managed to protect its shallow root system from compaction.
Its cultural weight is hard to overstate without slipping into hyperbole, so the plain facts will do: the tree is embedded in the Robin Hood legend, the outlaw of English folklore said to have sheltered in its hollow. That association made it one of Britain's most visited natural landmarks, drawing hundreds of thousands of tourists annually to a forest that is itself a protected Site of Special Scientific Interest.
CBS News attributed the death, at least in part, to heat waves and drought driven by climate change. The question of how Sherwood Forest's managers — Natural England, the RSPB, and Nottinghamshire County Council among others — handle the standing deadwood will matter enormously. Removing the trunk to manage visitor safety would strip away the bulk of the remaining habitat value. Retaining it in situ, as has become best practice for veteran tree sites, preserves that value while the site adjusts. Given the tree's cultural significance, the decision will attract scrutiny well beyond the specialist conservation community.
There is also a longer policy resonance here. England has made commitments under the Environmental Improvement Plan and international biodiversity frameworks to halt and reverse habitat loss, and ancient and veteran trees are formally designated as irreplaceable habitats under the National Planning Policy Framework.
