NSW Awards Contract for New Victoria Pass Bridge as Great Western Highway Closure Enters Fourth Month

The NSW Government awarded a contract on 26 June 2026 for a new bridge structure at Victoria Pass to replace the failed Mitchells Causeway, with major construction scheduled to begin in July — the clearest timeline yet after nearly four months of eastbound lane closures on the Great Western Highway.
The closure dates to Thursday 5 March 2026, when Transport for NSW identified a fault in the road surface of Mitchells Causeway and shut the eastbound lanes. A detour for eastbound motorists was established, but the disruption to one of the Blue Mountains' primary freight and commuter corridors has been sustained. As late as 12 May 2026, the NSW Road Minister acknowledged in parliamentary questioning that there was no firm timetable for reopening — a position that has now shifted with the contract award.
The structure at the centre of the closure is no ordinary piece of road infrastructure. Mitchells Causeway — also known as the Convict Bridge — is a heritage-listed structure whose construction began in January 1830 and which opened to traffic in 1832. Spanning approximately 150 metres of the Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass, it predates Federation by nearly seven decades. That heritage status shaped the engineering challenge from the outset: any intervention had to weigh structural necessity against the obligations attached to a listed colonial-era asset.
By early May 2026, Australian and global engineering firms were drawing up potential solutions, a sign that the scope had moved beyond routine road repair toward a more fundamental rebuild. The contract awarded on 26 June confirms that assessment: rather than remediate the existing causeway, the government has committed to a new bridge structure alongside it.
The compressed timeline — contract executed in late June, major works commencing in July — suggests the procurement process ran in parallel with the engineering design work that was publicly visible in May. That sequencing is not unusual for critical infrastructure where political and economic pressure is high, but it does place considerable weight on the contractor's mobilisation capacity and the adequacy of the geotechnical work underpinning the new alignment.
The economic stakes for the surrounding region have been real. The Great Western Highway is the primary surface route connecting Sydney to the central tablelands and beyond; the Victoria Pass section is a pinch point with no equivalent bypass. Businesses in Lithgow and the broader western corridor have been operating under the detour regime since March, and the ministerial release accompanying the contract award explicitly frames the decision in terms of relief for affected businesses — an acknowledgment that the disruption has carried measurable commercial cost.
What the contract award does not yet resolve is the fate of the original 1832 structure. A new bridge alongside the causeway can restore traffic flow without requiring demolition of the heritage asset, but the long-term management of the Convict Bridge — its conservation, public access, and the interface with the new structure — will require separate heritage and planning processes. Those questions sit with the NSW Heritage Council and the proponent under the Heritage Act 1977, and they are unlikely to be quick.
The July construction start gives the project a northern-hemisphere-summer window — locally, the drier months of the NSW winter and spring — before the region's weather patterns become less predictable. Whether the new structure can be brought to an operational standard before the end of 2026 depends on factors the contract itself does not disclose: design complexity, piling requirements into the Blue Mountains geology, and the heritage constraints that may govern works in proximity to the original causeway. What is clear is that, for the first time since March, there is a contractual commitment and a start date. For a corridor that has been without a firm answer for nearly four months, that is a material change.
