OpenAI is launching a new ChatGPT interface called Intelligent UI alongside its GPT-6 model on October 7, 2026. TechCrunch The company described the release in a Product announcement titled "GPT-6 and Intelligent UI for everyone" published the same day. OpenAI The rollout is global.

Intelligent UI integrates visuals directly into ChatGPT conversations. Many of those visuals are interactive rather than flat pictures. The set includes tappable buttons, task-specific calculators, interactive charts, and editable graphs. Responses can shift from text blocks to interface elements users can manipulate inside the thread.

Availability is tiered by plan. Intelligent UI is rolling out globally with GPT-6 for Pro, Plus, Business, and Enterprise users. Free and lower-cost Go tier users receive access Thursday. That sequencing puts paid and workplace tiers first, with broad consumer availability following on Thursday.

The interface is customizable. Users can dial back the amount of visuals in responses. OpenAI says the goal is to make learning complex topics easier. Aarush Selvan is a product manager at OpenAI.

In a demonstration, Intelligent UI generated diagrams to explain how an airplane wing generates lift. The example centers on a concept that is difficult to convey in prose alone and benefits from spatial representation. Users can adjust and probe the visual output rather than parse a static image.

This continues a multi-year shift in ChatGPT from a text stream to a composite workspace. OpenAI described Canvas as a new approach and the first major update to ChatGPT's visual interface since its launch two years earlier when it introduced the feature in October 2024. OpenAI Canvas was in early beta at introduction. In October 2025, OpenAI introduced apps in ChatGPT together with a new Apps SDK, with apps responding to natural language and including interactive interfaces usable directly in chat. OpenAI In March 2026, the company added interactive visual explanations for math and science in ChatGPT to help explore formulas, variables and concepts. OpenAI

Looking at what this means for expert users, the important change is not decoration. It is state. Buttons, calculators, charts and editable graphs imply structured outputs with retained parameters. A calculator keeps its inputs. A chart keeps its data binding. A graph keeps its model. That allows iteration inside the conversation without exporting to another tool, copying values, or rebuilding context.

In this author's view, the customization control matters as much as the visuals themselves. Engineers and researchers often want density first and illustration on demand. Worth flagging: visual richness can increase cognitive load and inference cost if left always on. A dial, rather than a toggle, suggests OpenAI anticipates different tasks will need different balances of prose and interface. I have watched my own children learn faster when they can move a slider and see a system respond, and that same loop applies to professional work.

Looking ahead for teams shipping internal tools, documentation, onboarding, or data review flows, the practical test will be simple. It either reduces time to understanding, or it does not. Learning and exploration look like the early proving ground, where an editable model teaches more than a paragraph.
