Brazil's Burned Area Drops 58% in 2025 as Amazon Fires Hit 41-Year Low

Brazil's burned area fell to approximately 12.7 million hectares in 2025, down from 30 million hectares in 2024, with the Amazon recording its lowest number of fires in 41 years, according to MapBiomas data reported by the BBC on July 21, 2026.
The 2025 figures represent a 31% drop compared to the historical average, driven primarily by the Amazon's unprecedented fire reduction. Vera Arruda, a researcher at the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM) and coordinator at MapBiomas, told the BBC: "The 2025 figures are significant and show that it is possible to reduce the burned area in the country." Arruda cautioned, however, that the result "does not yet allow us to conclude that this is an established trend or to scale back prevention efforts."
The decline partly reflects an easing of the unprecedented fires that defined 2024. That year, Brazil's burned area grew 79% over 2023 and exceeded the historical average by 62%, according to MapBiomas's Monitor do Fogo. The Amazon alone accounted for approximately 17.9 million hectares burned, 58% of the national total and a figure that surpassed 2023's total for the biome. Both the Amazon and the Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) set records for burned-area extent in 2024, according to MapBiomas's Relatório Anual do Fogo. Nearly one-third (29%) of Brazil's total burned area in 2024 occurred in mega fire events exceeding 100,000 hectares each. The BBC attributed the severity of the 2024 Amazon fires, described as the worst in over two decades, to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, citing "climate extremes and human activity."
The shift between 2024 and 2025 aligns with a transition in Pacific climate conditions. The 2025 decline was helped by cooler La Niña conditions replacing the warmer El Niño pattern that prevailed during 2024's fire season. MapBiomas has warned, however, that El Niño could return and extend the 2025 dry season, increasing the risk of forest fires.
MapBiomas's tracking throughout 2025 showed the downward trajectory building steadily. The Monitor do Fogo reported a 70% reduction in burned area across Brazil in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, with the Amazon biome recording 55,100 hectares burned in that window. By July 2025, Brazil registered its smallest monthly burned area in seven years, totaling 748,000 hectares, a 40% reduction compared to July 2024. Notably, 75% of that monthly burned area consumed native vegetation.
The compositional breakdown of what burns in Brazil adds a layer of complexity to the headline figures. In 2024, pastures accounted for 53.2% of the burned area in the Amazon biome. Across the Amazon and Atlantic Forest combined, more than 55% of the burned area occurred in anthropogenic zones, meaning lands already altered by human use. This pattern underscores that fire in Brazil is not exclusively a frontier-deforestation phenomenon; it is deeply embedded in land-management practices, including pasture renewal and slash-and-burn agriculture, which can spill into standing forest under dry conditions.
For context, the highest national burned-area total since records began was 30.7 million hectares in 2007. The 2024 figure of 30 million hectares thus came within striking distance of that peak. The 2025 Amazon total of approximately 3.1 million hectares, reported by MapBiomas, marks the smallest area since the biome's records began in 1985.
The broader context here is one of climate variability and policy interacting in ways that are difficult to disentangle. La Niña conditions in 2025 contributed to reduced fire activity, but attributing the full decline to ocean-atmosphere dynamics alone would overlook the role of enforcement, prevention infrastructure, and land-use decisions that also shape fire outcomes. Similarly, the 2024 spike cannot be explained by El Niño alone; the dominance of anthropogenic-area burning points to human agency as a primary driver, with climate conditions acting as an amplifier rather than the root cause. Arruda's caution about treating the 2025 result as an established trend is well-placed: a single La Niña year does not constitute a structural shift, and the potential return of El Niño could test whether the gains hold.
MapBiomas published its latest Annual Fire Report (Relatório Anual do Fogo) showing that Brazil's 2025 burned area fell below the historical average. The BBC refers to this as "the MapBiomas report" without specifying the product line or providing a direct release URL.
