Airbus will test folding wings on a modified A321neo in the second half of 2027, the company announced at the Farnborough airshow on July 21, 2026. The A321neo belongs to the A320 family, the bestselling aircraft model of all time. Airbus is preparing to begin assembly of the wing extension at its factory in Broughton, north Wales. The test programme will unfold in phases: the first will fix the extensions to the airframe with bolts only, without the hinges that would ultimately permit the wings to fold. That hinged mechanism will come in a later phase.

The folding-wing concept addresses a straightforward constraint. Longer wings improve aerodynamic efficiency, but they can exceed the gate span limits that airports are built around. Folding wingtips let an aircraft enjoy the cruise performance of a high-aspect-ratio wing while fitting within standard parking dimensions on the ground. Boeing has already installed folding wingtips on its 777X, a widebody, but the technology has not yet been applied to any single-aisle aircraft, the category that dominates global commercial fleets.

Partridge indicated that Airbus already has a clear sense of the next generation's architecture. The aircraft will use relatively heavy, large-diameter engines and wings with a gull-like dihedral bend for aerodynamic benefit. The engine choice itself remains open. Airbus is weighing a conventional geared turbofan with a covered nacelle that encases the fan blades against an "open fan" or unducted configuration with exposed blades, a concept that promises fuel-efficiency gains but would introduce different certification and airframe-integration challenges.

The engine decision is not Airbus's alone to make, and the timeline for the supply chain is contracting. Rolls-Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgiç told reporters at Farnborough that the company has only two years to persuade Airbus and Boeing to select its engines for their next-generation single-aisle aircraft. Rolls-Royce is positioning its UltraFan programme as its offering, and Erginbilgiç pressed the UK government under new prime minister Andy Burnham to back the UltraFan effort. He noted that the new chancellor is John Healey, previously the defence secretary, implicitly signalling that Rolls-Royce views the fiscal and industrial-policy stance of the new government as material to the programme's trajectory.

Airbus has said it will decide on the shape of its new aircraft by 2030. That deadline frames the 2027 flight tests as a data-gathering milestone rather than a final configuration decision, with the wing-extension flights feeding into a broader architecture trade study that must converge within roughly three and a half years.

The broader stakes here extend across the competitive landscape and the industrial supply chain. Single-aisle aircraft are the workhorses of global aviation, and the next-generation replacement for the A320 and Boeing 737 families will lock in engine, wing, and airframe choices for decades. Airbus's decision to pursue folding-wing testing on the A321neo signals that the manufacturer is treating airport-gate compatibility as a hard constraint that must be engineered into the airframe design rather than negotiated away with infrastructure changes. Boeing's 777X wingtip precedent exists only in the widebody segment, leaving single-aisle folding-wing technology unproven at scale. Whoever validates it first acquires performance data and certification experience that could shape industry expectations for future narrowbody designs.

On the propulsion side, Erginbilgiç's two-year window reflects a recognised inflection point. Engine development cycles run well ahead of airframe entry into service, and both Airbus and Boeing will need to commit to a powerplant architecture with enough lead time for testing and certification. Rolls-Royce's push for government backing of UltraFan suggests the company views public co-investment as necessary to compete with the incumbent position that CFM International and Pratt & Whitney hold in the current single-aisle market. The political dimension, with a new UK government whose chancellor comes from the defence portfolio, adds a variable that is not yet resolved.
