Orcas Observed Ramming Giant Sunfish Until They Fragment: Cooperative Feeding Strategy or Play?

Research published in the journal Frontiers in Ethology documents a previously unrecorded orca feeding behavior in the Gulf of California, off the coast of Mexico, in which one killer whale holds a dead giant sunfish in its jaws while a second orca smashes into the prey at high speed, causing the fish to break into thousands of pieces. The paper, titled "Fragmentation of Sharp-Tail Sunfish (Masturus lanceolatus)," was received by the journal on March 20, 2026, and reported on July 23, 2026, by multiple outlets including The Guardian, The New York Times, CNN, and Ars Technica The Guardian.

The target species is the sharp-tail sunfish (Masturus lanceolatus), which can grow to more than three metres long and weigh up to 2,000kg. Sunfish are commonly hunted and eaten by orcas. The ramming behavior itself follows a specific sequence. Erick Higuera, a marine biologist and wildlife cinematographer at the Mexican non-profit Conexiones Terramar, is a co-author of the research. The study proposes two non-exclusive hypotheses for the behavior. The first is functional: blowing the sunfish apart allows adult orcas to circumvent the prey's tough, rubbery skin for the benefit of juveniles whose smaller jaws cannot easily tear into an intact fish Smithsonian Magazine. The ramming-fragmentation behavior documented in this study adds a cooperative element that has not previously been described in the literature. The involvement of a juvenile consuming the fragmented pieces lends weight to the provisioning hypothesis, though the play hypothesis cannot be excluded given that orcas are known to engage in object manipulation and social play with prey items across multiple populations.
Two observations, separated by over a year and recorded by different parties, suggest the behavior is not an isolated anomaly. The Gulf of California hosts both resident and transient orca populations, and the presence of juvenile orcas in both events raises questions about whether the behavior is learned socially within pods and transmitted across generations, a pattern well-documented in other orca foraging traditions.
The research also raises methodological considerations. The first event was captured on a GoPro by a scientist; the second by a tourism operator. Citizen science and tourism-based observation have become increasingly valuable in marine ethology, particularly in regions like the Gulf of California where research vessel time is limited and orca encounters are unpredictable. The reliance on opportunistic footage, however, means that sample sizes remain small, and the authors' hypotheses are necessarily preliminary.
What remains unresolved is whether the ramming serves a primarily nutritional, social, or developmental function. The two hypotheses are not mutually exclusive: cooperative prey processing that simultaneously functions as motor-skill practice for juveniles would be consistent with what is known of cetacean behavioral development. Further observation, ideally with tagged individuals, would be needed to determine whether the behavior is restricted to specific pods or more widespread across orca populations in the region.
