Qualcomm CEO Confirms Chip Price Hikes Starting September 1 as Handset Revenue Hits 2021 Lows

Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon confirmed on July 29, 2026 that prices on the company's products will rise effective September 1, speaking to CNBC in an interview tied to the company's earnings presentation. The Apple modem situation compounds the handset pressure. Qualcomm expects its modem share for the upcoming iPhone launch to be "materially lower" and anticipates an acceleration in the revenue dip from Apple products. Apple's long-running effort to develop in-house modem silicon has been the subject of industry attention for years, and the phrase "materially lower" is a concrete data point on the trajectory. Qualcomm's own forward guidance now treats the erosion of Apple-derived revenue not as a risk scenario but as a baseline assumption.
Looking at the broader portfolio shift, Qualcomm projected that only half of its revenue will come from phones in the near term, falling to roughly one-third by 2029 as its data center and automotive businesses ramp. The dividend increase preceded the customer notification on price hikes by roughly four months, meaning Qualcomm had already signaled financial confidence to shareholders before the component-cost squeeze became a public talking point.
In this author's view, the collection of signals from this single earnings event paints a company in active transition rather than acute crisis. The handset decline is real and the Apple modem erosion is accelerating, but Qualcomm is simultaneously raising prices on its core product, locking in a decade of automotive revenue, and projecting a revenue mix where phones are a minority contributor within a few years. The tension worth watching is whether the price hike accelerates the OEM defection to prior-gen silicon that Palkhiwala described. If the double-digit increase pushes enough volume backward rather than forward, the pricing action that addresses margin compression could end up quietly accelerating the revenue-mix shift away from handsets that Qualcomm is already planning for. The company's own timeline says that shift is coming regardless; the question is whether the price hike makes it faster than projected.
