Why Anthropic Is Opening an Office in India

Anthropic, the company behind the AI assistant Claude, announced in October 2025 that it is opening an office in India.
AnthropIC sells access to Claude through the internet — other companies and developers pay to use Claude's intelligence for their own products. India matters for this business because it has an enormous number of software engineers and companies that are eager to adopt AI technology.
Other major technology companies have already moved into India for the same reason. Google, Microsoft, and Meta have all expanded their operations there over the past few years. They are looking for talented engineers to hire, and they want to be close to customers who are interested in buying AI services.
A physical office might seem unnecessary for a company that sells services online. But for enterprise customers — large companies, especially in banking and healthcare — a local office sends an important message: we take your market seriously, and we will stick around to support you. It builds trust in a way that a distant online relationship cannot.
Many other AI companies are competing for the same Indian customers and developers. OpenAI, Google, and others are all trying to win loyalty and signed contracts. Anthropic has built Claude by focusing on safety — the idea that an AI system should be careful and thoughtful, not reckless. Whether that approach appeals to Indian businesses as much as it has to companies in Europe and the US is not yet clear.
India's technology infrastructure is mature. It has a strong payment system, digital identity networks, and cloud computing services from all the major providers. Once a company like Anthropic has established local relationships, it can grow quickly. The sooner Anthropic gets established, the better — because competitors are moving fast, and early relationships can matter for a long time.
Whether the office succeeds will depend on what Anthropic actually does next. Will they hire local staff. Will they announce partnerships with Indian companies. Will they pursue government contracts. Those concrete steps will show whether the office is a serious long-term commitment or just a symbolic gesture. The office is only the beginning.
