Until Dawn 2 Is Coming to PlayStation 5 on January 28, 2027

Sony has announced that Until Dawn 2 will launch on January 28, 2027, exclusively on PlayStation 5. The news came during a PlayStation State of Play video presentation on September 3, 2026, which included a new trailer showing gameplay footage. More details were shared in a PlayStation.Blog post written by Stu Tilley, who works at the game's developer, Firesprite (PlayStation.Blog).
Pre-orders open September 10, according to a trailer published alongside the announcement (IGN) (Polygon). Sony also released a pre-order trailer featuring the game's lead actor, Dacre Montgomery, known for playing Billy Hargrove in seasons two and three of Stranger Things (Engadget.
The sequel moves the story from the snowy mountain of the 2015 original game to a tropical island. The trailer promised "chilling choices and familiar locations," suggesting the new setting still connects to the first game's story (Facebook/PlayStation).
Until Dawn 2 is being developed by Firesprite, a studio based in Liverpool that is best known for making virtual reality games. That is a change from the first Until Dawn, which was made by a different studio called Supermassive Games in 2015. The original game starred Rami Malek and Hayden Panettiere; Montgomery now leads the sequel. Sony is publishing the game, and the official PlayStation listing classifies it as an adventure title with a 2027 copyright (PlayStation.com).
The game was first announced in June 2026 in a PlayStation.Blog post titled "Until Dawn 2 is coming to PS5 in 2027," which confirmed the release year but did not give a specific date (PlayStation.Blog). The September 3 presentation narrowed that down to January 28.
In the original Until Dawn, the story changed based on the choices the player made, and those choices could determine whether characters lived or died. The sequel's trailer language about "chilling choices" suggests that same approach is returning. What is not yet clear is how Firesprite will handle that kind of story-telling in a tropical-island setting, and whether the studio's background in virtual reality will influence how players interact with the game.
The broader context here is that Firesprite's involvement is the element most worth watching. The studio's track record is rooted in virtual reality development, and Until Dawn as a series is fundamentally about cinematic, third-person horror presentation. Whether Firesprite can adapt its approach to a standard screen-and-controller experience, or whether it will bring virtual-reality-style interactions into the design, is an open question that the January launch will answer.
The casting of Montgomery follows the first game's pattern of hiring recognizable television and film actors for lead roles. Malek's appearance in the 2015 original became a frequently mentioned detail after he later won an Oscar; Sony's choice of Montgomery, already well-known from Stranger Things, is a more immediately marketable selection.
Sony has not announced a PC release. The official PlayStation listing and all promotional materials specify PS5 exclusivity, and no other platforms have been mentioned in any source associated with the announcement.
For PS5 owners, January 28, 2027 gives a concrete date for one of Sony's more anticipated horror sequels. For the broader industry, the game is a test case for whether a popular horror franchise can successfully change studios, shift settings, and keep its identity in a single console generation.
In this author's view, the roughly five months between the summer announcement and the January launch is a short window for a story-driven game of this scope, especially one that is also changing developers and settings at the same time. If Firesprite can deliver a branching horror experience that matches the original's quality on that timeline, it would be a notable achievement. If not, the compressed schedule will likely be the reason.
