Nintendo Switch Gets a Small Update: Here's What Changed

Nintendo released a system update called 21.0.0 for all Switch models — the original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED. The update makes two specific improvements, according to Nintendo's official support page.
The first change improves the "Adjust Screen Size" feature. If you've ever plugged your Switch into a TV or monitor and noticed black bars around the edges, or had to squint to see the picture properly, this feature lets you fix that. Nintendo made the adjustment process clearer by improving what you see on screen while you move the boundary sliders, so you don't have to guess whether you've got it right.
The second change updates the Notifications system. Nintendo didn't provide much detail about what changed here — just that notifications received "updates." This could mean changes to how notifications arrive, how they look, or how the backend system sends them. For most players, the change probably won't feel obvious. But if you use apps or services on your Switch that send you notifications, you might notice something different.
These kinds of updates are routine for Nintendo. The Switch is now nine years old, and Nintendo regularly releases small software improvements that fix minor problems or add small features rather than overhaul the system. Over time, these add up: the Switch has gained wireless Bluetooth audio support, expanded cloud save options, and better local wireless features through dozens of updates since it launched in 2017.
The update will install automatically if you have automatic updates turned on. If you prefer to update manually, you can find it in System Settings.
Nintendo didn't mention any changes to overall performance or stability in the release notes. The focus is purely on those two specific improvements. This careful, narrow approach is typical for Nintendo when the Switch still has a large, active player base — the company tends to avoid big system changes that could cause unexpected problems before the Switch 2 arrives.
If you own a Switch, you'll likely see this update appear on your console soon. It's safe to install and won't change how you play.
