Uber announced easier ride options for older adults and people with limited mobility on Sept. 15, 2026. The update adds solo senior accounts, a new settings page, and a test of cars that are easier to board. Engadget

Before, a senior account had to be linked to a family member's regular Uber account. That person set it up and helped manage it. Now an older adult can set up and manage the account alone.

Senior accounts now have a settings page. Riders can choose how the driver signals arrival at pickup. It includes Simple mode, with fewer buttons and bigger text. Riders can also tell the driver ahead of time if they use a cane or walker.

Uber is testing Easy Entry Vehicles, cars with a low step-in. Like a filter for easy boarding, any rider can request one from the Accessibility settings page. The test will run in nine markets. Uber did not say where.

The changes build on senior accounts Uber started in 2025. The company described them as a simpler way for older adults to book their own rides, with flexible payment and live safety features. A family member can still book rides, manage payment, and follow trips in real time. Uber investor release

In the app, that meant fewer buttons and clear prompts. Uber described Simple mode as fewer screens and larger text. Uber Canada It later expanded to Canada. Uber says 42% of adults age 65 and older drive less or not at all, and says eligible people can use Medicare Advantage flex benefits to help pay.

The broader context here is simple. If setup needs a family member, some riders never get started. Solo setup fixes that, while keeping family help for those who want it.

In my view, the tech is simple on purpose, and that is good. No new invention, just clearer choices saved and shared with the driver. That can decide whether someone reaches a doctor visit, the store, or a grandchild's recital alone. If the test expands, more people can travel on their own for longer.
