How It Works

The device uses a ring of sensors — imagine a necklace of microphones, except they send and listen to sound waves instead of capturing audio. These sensors fire ultrasound pulses through water and measure what bounces back. Water is essential here: ultrasound travels well through liquid but falls apart in air, which is why ultrasounds always use gel or water as a bridge between the probe and your skin.

Once the raw sound data comes in, artificial intelligence steps in to identify what's what. The AI learns to spot your organs, muscles, and other structures and label them on the image, per The Next Web. The company is splitting the problem into two parts: collecting the raw data, then teaching a computer to make sense of it.

The company plans to launch through a wellness spa in San Francisco by the end of 2027, per MarketWatch. That choice — a spa instead of a hospital — matters more than it sounds.

Why Ultrasound Instead of Other Methods

Most full-body scans today use either CT scans (which use radiation) or MRI (which uses magnetic fields). Both expose you to something: CT uses ionizing radiation, which can damage cells if you do it repeatedly. You cannot safely get repeated full-body CT scans for "wellness checking." MRI is radiation-free, but the machines are huge, expensive, and take 30 minutes or more.

Ultrasound has no radiation at all. Doctors already use it routinely — ultrasounds of pregnancies, hearts, and livers are standard and safe to repeat. The catch is that ultrasound images get harder to read as you look deeper into the body. Sound waves bounce around inside tissue in messy ways, especially when traveling through different types of tissue. A ring of sensors around your body, collecting slices from all angles at once, is a smart way to try to work around that limitation. It is similar in concept to how CT scanners rotate a radiation source around you to build a complete image, except this one uses sound instead.

The Real Question: Can the AI Actually Work

The technology lives or dies on whether the artificial intelligence can accurately identify what it is seeing. Ultrasound images are noisier and harder to read than CT or MRI images. They depend heavily on who is holding the probe and how. Teaching a computer to spot a liver, a kidney, or something abnormal in an ultrasound image is harder than teaching it to do the same with a CT scan.

Midjourney Medical has not yet published any peer-reviewed research showing how accurate its AI actually is. It has not tested the scanner on real patients and shared the results with the medical community. That gap is important — before a device can legitimately tell you something medical, you need evidence it works.

The Regulatory Problem They Are Sidestepping

Here is where the wellness spa choice becomes strategic. If Midjourney markets this as a diagnostic medical device — one that actually diagnoses disease — the FDA requires extensive testing and approval before launch. That process takes years.

But if they call it a wellness tool, not a medical device, they can skip that pathway. That is commercially sensible but risky. If the scanner finds something abnormal — a mass, an enlarged organ, fluid where it should not be — the company has a problem. It cannot legally report the finding as a medical diagnosis. But the person using it knows something was spotted and will worry. That creates liability.

Other companies like Prenuvo offer whole-body MRI scans directly to healthy people without going through a doctor's referral. This sector has drawn complaints from radiologists and regulatory scrutiny because these scans find incidental findings — things that look odd but may never cause harm — that then trigger anxiety and follow-up testing. Ultrasound's fuzzier images might actually spot fewer false alarms than MRI, but that also limits what it can honestly claim to find.

What Happens Next

The underlying physics and technology are sound. Ultrasound does what it is supposed to do. The unproven part is whether the AI layer produces accurate, useful results — or whether it is just a sophisticated guessing game. The company has roughly 18 months until the planned 2027 launch to prove the AI works, sort out how the FDA will regulate it, and figure out how to actually run the business. That is not much time to do all three.

Whether Midjourney treats the spa launch as a dry run to gather real patient data and refine the AI — or as the final product — will determine whether this becomes a durable technology or an ambitious experiment that fades away. Right now, that question is unanswered.
