Venezuela's interim President Delcy Rodríguez met U.S. President Donald Trump late Tuesday in New York during the United Nations General Assembly. The Guardian

Rodríguez was vice-president under Nicolás Maduro. She is now interim president, which means temporary leader until a permanent decision is made.

They met at the Lotte New York Palace hotel in Manhattan, a few blocks from Trump Tower. Maduro is being held in a prison in Brooklyn, about 7 miles away, since his capture in a special forces raid on Caracas.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who leads American diplomacy, and deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller were also there, according to a White House aide.

Rodríguez called the meeting "historic." She said she and Trump discussed stronger ties between the two countries and cooperation on energy, mining, security and other matters of common interest.

Rodríguez arrived in the United States on Monday to attend the General Assembly. AFP A Venezuelan delegation led by her is taking part in this week's proceedings. Reuters The White House had said in advance that Trump would meet the acting Venezuelan president in New York. WLRN She is expected to address the annual General Assembly on Wednesday.

The broader context here is the order of events. Arrival Monday, meeting Tuesday, speech Wednesday. Think of it like a private talk before speaking to a full room. Each side heard from the other before the public part of the week.

Looking at what happens next, watch the topics and the follow-up. Energy, mining and security were named together, with other issues left open. That broad list leaves room for staff talks without setting a date. With both Rubio and Miller in the room, next steps would likely go through diplomatic and White House channels. What counts is whether working-level contacts and planning continue after New York.

In my view, place also matters. The meeting was blocks from Trump Tower, while the former president is held miles away in Brooklyn. Short distances give diplomats tighter control over travel and messages. The question now is whether the Wednesday speech keeps to Tuesday's list or adds to it.
