Lost in the Mountains: How a Smart Drone Found Missing Hikers

On 25 June 2026, a special drone helped rescue two missing hikers in Kosciuszko National Park in Australia's Snowy Mountains. Firefighters from Jindabyne Fire Station launched the drone, which was equipped with thermal imaging—technology that sees heat instead of light. According to Fire and Rescue NSW, the operation successfully located the hikers.
Searching the Snowy Mountains on foot is slow and difficult. The park covers about 6,900 square kilometres of steep, forested terrain. A hiker lost in dense bushland or hidden in a ravine is almost impossible for ground search teams to spot with their eyes. A thermal camera on a drone solves this problem: it detects the heat coming from a human body and shows it on screen, even through trees and darkness.
What makes this rescue noteworthy is that the drone used artificial intelligence—a computer system that learns to recognize patterns. When a human operator looks at thermal images, they must figure out what they are seeing: Is that a person, or just a warm rock? Is it an animal? AI does this sorting automatically and instantly, flagging likely human heat signatures for the operator. In a real emergency, when a lost person is at risk from cold, this speed matters.
ABC News confirmed that the Jindabyne team conducted the search. Jindabyne is the main gateway to the mountains, so it makes sense that rescue teams are based there.
Fire departments across Australia now own and operate their own drones instead of waiting for specialist teams. This means a thermal drone can launch within minutes of an emergency call, rather than hours later. That speed in the opening hours of a search can be the difference between finding someone before their situation becomes critical.
The Kosciuszko rescue worked out well. The hikers were found and brought to safety. We don't yet know exactly how long they were missing or how long the drone search took, information that would help us understand how much this technology changed the outcome compared to traditional searching.
As thermal drones become cheaper and AI systems improve, fire and rescue agencies will launch them earlier and more often. Within a few years, AI-assisted thermal drones may be the first tool deployed in almost any missing-person case in remote terrain, rather than a last resort. This rescue is one step along that path.
