Europe's Record Heat Wave: What's Happening and Why It Matters

Europe just experienced a severe heat wave in late June 2026, with temperature records breaking across multiple countries. This wasn't just an unusually hot spell. According to the World Meteorological Organization, it's the latest in a pattern. Data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service found that 95% of Europe saw above-average temperatures in 2025, and the continent is warming faster than the global average.

Water Under Pressure

Record-breaking temperatures become more likely when the whole distribution has shifted upward, the way record-breaking test scores become more common in a class where everyone studied harder.
For the people managing water supplies, running power plants, and planning crop production across Mediterranean Europe, the job has changed fundamentally. They can no longer prepare just for rare, extreme events. Instead, they need to plan for a new reality: several-week heat waves and drought stress happening regularly, at the same time.
The policy frameworks — the rules and plans Europe set up for managing droughts, water use, and energy sharing across borders — were mostly designed for the climate that existed before. That climate no longer exists.
The data from the World Meteorological Organization and European Environment Agency suggest that this late June heat wave is not just one emergency among many. It marks the point where institutions finally need to catch up to what the climate has already become.
