Someone Got a 3D Game Running on a Tiny Handheld With No Graphics Chip

Game developer Cristina Ramos posted a video on July 22, 2026 to Bluesky showing a 3D first-person game running on the Playdate, a small handheld game device (Engadget). The demo shows a player running and jumping through indoor spaces and across rooftops, similar to Mirror's Edge, a 2008 parkour game.

Ramos, who posts under the handle @saffroncr.bsky.social, said on Bluesky that people had told her 3D and outdoor Mirror's Edge-style levels could not be done on the Playdate. She built the demo to prove them wrong (Engadget).

Here is why that is impressive. The Playdate, made by companies called Panic and Teenage Engineering, has a black-and-white screen where each pixel can only be on or off — no shades of gray. Its processor runs at 180 MHz, which is very modest by modern standards. Most importantly, it has no graphics chip at all. Think of it like a computer with a brain but no dedicated visual processor. Every single image on the screen has to be calculated by that small main processor, one pixel at a time. The device was designed for simple 2D games, not 3D worlds.

Normally, 3D games rely on a graphics chip to handle the heavy lifting: turning 3D shapes into the flat image you see on screen, deciding which objects are in front of which, and filling in colors and textures. Without a graphics chip, the Playdate's small processor has to do all of that work itself, within tight limits on speed and memory. On top of that, a first-person game needs to detect when the player bumps into walls, keep sound cues accurate, and respond to button presses instantly so the game feels playable.

The demo includes both indoor and outdoor scenes. These are two different challenges for 3D rendering: indoor spaces have walls and objects close together that block the view, while outdoor scenes need to handle longer sightlines and more open space.

Ramos did not share the technical details of how she built it. But the video shows surfaces that appear shaded, geometry that looks correct in perspective, and movement through connected spaces at what looks like a playable speed. Since the screen can only show pixels as fully on or fully off, any appearance of shading comes from dithering — a technique where patterns of black and white dots trick the eye into seeing gray areas. That means the software is also choosing the right dot patterns to suggest depth and different materials.

The choice of Mirror's Edge as a reference is deliberate. That game is about quickly reading your surroundings, spotting a path through the architecture, and making precise jumps. To work on the Playdate, the 3D world has to be rendered clearly enough that a player can judge distances and figure out where to go. That is hard to do on a low-resolution, black-and-white screen, which makes the demo's apparent playability worth noting.

In my view, the Playdate has consistently attracted developers who see hardware limits as a creative challenge rather than a roadblock. Ramos's demo fits that tradition. The broader point is that when people say something "cannot be done" in game development, they often mean it would take unusual effort and cleverness, not that it is technically impossible. A small chip with no graphics processor is not where anyone expects to find a 3D first-person platforming game, and yet here it is, running.

The demo also comes at a time when independent game developers are actively experimenting with unusual hardware. Devices like the Playdate, the Analogue Pocket, and various retro handhelds have built communities where people try things just to see if they can, not always to make a product to sell. Ramos's video is a proof of concept, not an announced game you can buy.

Whether other Playdate developers will build on what Ramos did here, or whether it stands alone as a one-time achievement, is not yet known. But the video itself directly answers the claim that the Playdate's hardware makes real-time 3D with first-person movement impossible.
