Professor Hannah Fry has been awarded the Leelavati Prize at a major mathematics gathering, the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), currently taking place in Philadelphia from 23–30 July 2026. The prize is given every four years by the International Mathematical Union (IMU) and recognises outstanding efforts to increase public awareness of mathematics (University of Cambridge).

Fry is a professor at the University of Cambridge, where she holds the title of Professor of the Public Understanding of Mathematics. She joined Cambridge in January 2025 as the first person ever to hold that role (University of Cambridge). The creation of the position itself suggests that mathematics departments are starting to treat public communication as part of their core work, not just an optional extra.

The prize citation calls Fry "one of the foremost global ambassadors for mathematical thinking" and "a voice for mathematics that resonates far beyond the public audience normally interested in science communication." It awards the prize "for her creative approach to communicating that mathematics is very powerful and also a lot of fun" (IMU citation; IMU article by Allyn Jackson).

Previous winners of the Leelavati Prize include Nikolai Andreev in 2022 and Ali Nesin in 2018 (IMU). The prize is announced every four years at the same event as the Fields Medals, which are often described as the highest honour in mathematics.

The broader context here is worth noting. The Leelavati Prize exists specifically to reward mathematical outreach, an area that has historically struggled for recognition within mathematics departments. Fry's appointment to a named position at Cambridge and her receipt of the IMU's top public-communication prize within roughly 18 months suggest that the field is shifting from tolerating public engagement to actively investing in it.

The citation's language is unusually expansive for an IMU document. Saying that Fry's reach goes "far beyond the public audience normally interested in science communication" is a quiet acknowledgment that mathematics is harder to communicate than the experimental sciences. A physics demonstration or a biology visualization can rely on things people can see or touch. Mathematics, by its nature, deals in abstraction. It needs people who can translate those abstractions into something a non-specialist can actually enjoy. The citation's emphasis on "fun" is doing real work in that framing.

The connection to technology is worth understanding. The mathematics behind modern computing, online security, artificial intelligence, and data analysis is, in its working form, inaccessible to most people who rely on it every day. Communicators who can make that material understandable to non-specialists serve a function that is increasingly hard to dismiss as mere popularization. The IMU's decision to recognise that work at its most prestigious event signals that the mathematical community considers public literacy in the discipline a serious priority.

In this author's view, the pairing of a newly created Cambridge position with the Leelavati Prize tells a consistent story: the institutions that produce mathematical knowledge are beginning to treat its transmission to the public as part of their core mission, not a charitable sideline. Whether that commitment outlasts the current news cycle is, as always, the open question. But the structural signals, a named professorship and an international prize converging on the same person, are more durable than a single announcement.
