Big Earthquake Hits Japan: What Happened in Kumamoto

A powerful earthquake hit the Kumamoto area of southern Japan on July 28, 2026, at 4:27 in the afternoon. At least 13 people died and dozens more were hurt across a wide part of western Japan. The explosion at the mall seems to have been caused by a gas leak — when earthquake shaking breaks gas pipes, the leaking gas can ignite and explode. A separate gas-leak explosion happened elsewhere in Kumamoto, and that area was cordoned off on July 29 (Kyodo News). Kyodo News, a Japanese news agency, sent out an automatic earthquake alert right after the quake and initially reported one death with dozens feared injured (Kyodo News). That number rose as rescue teams reached more people.
Two aftershocks — smaller earthquakes that happen after the main one as the ground settles — followed within the first hour. The first was a magnitude 4.8 at 4:29 p.m., and the second came at 5:08 p.m. Both were centered in the Kumamoto region (JMA). Damage also spread beyond the area closest to the quake.
