The DRC's Massive Ebola Outbreak, Explained Simply

The World Health Organization has confirmed that the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the largest in the country's history. As of 30 July 2026, it is also the world's second-largest outbreak on record, with 3,605 confirmed cases and 1,587 deaths. BBC News; Al Jazeera
The outbreak was declared on 15 May 2026 in Ituri Province, which borders South Sudan and Uganda. Two days later, the WHO labeled it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. This label is an official alarm bell that tells countries they need to coordinate a global response. At that point, eight laboratory-confirmed cases, 246 suspected cases, and 80 suspected deaths had been reported in Ituri alone. The number of sick people has risen quickly since mid-May. Between 3 July and mid-July, the WHO documented an additional 664 confirmed cases and 376 confirmed deaths. The Guardian reported on 31 July that this is the fastest-growing outbreak in the history of the Ebola virus. It has already passed the case count of the 2018–2020 outbreak in the same region. A major reason for this difference in deaths is the specific type of virus. The current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain. Unlike the Zaire strain seen in previous years, there is no approved vaccine for Bundibugyo. Vaccine candidates are under development in the United Kingdom and Singapore. Without a vaccine, health workers must rely on watching communities, tracking who sick people have touched, isolating patients, and providing basic medical care. The geography makes this hard. The outbreak is centered in Ituri and has spread to North and South Kivu, regions long affected by armed conflict, mass displacement, and loose borders with Uganda and South Sudan. Ebola virus disease spreads through contact with bodily fluids and has killed approximately 15,000 people across Africa over the past 50 years. Ministry of Public Health data compiled as of 31 July recorded 1,556 deaths at a fatality rate of 44.1 percent. This matches the WHO's 30 July figures. The Bundibugyo strain historically kills fewer people than the Zaire strain, which typically kills more than 60 percent of those infected. The lower death rate, combined with the lack of a vaccine, creates conditions where transmission can persist longer. Because more people survive, they remain mobile and can unknowingly spread the virus.
The broader context here is the scale of the operational challenge. The global alarm bell was meant to trigger coordinated international help, but the WHO calling the outbreak "intensifying" nearly three months later shows that containment has not happened. The mix of a virus with no vaccine, active fighting, people moving across borders, and a rapid spread rate places this outbreak in a difficult category. The effort to build a vaccine in the UK and Singapore is a look toward the future, but testing and approving a vaccine takes months at minimum. For now, the path forward depends on whether community engagement, contact tracing, and border surveillance can outpace a virus the WHO describes as accelerating week over week.
