The World's Largest Camera Just Photographed Half a Million Galaxies in One Shot

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory has released its first image of a well-known patch of sky called the COSMOS field, capturing more than half a million galaxies and over 50,000 stars in a single frame. The image, released on July 31, 2026, also comes with the observatory's first science-ready catalog — a detailed list of what the camera saw and where (SLAC).
The camera used for this image, called the LSST Camera, was completed in 2024 at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. It is the largest digital camera ever built for astronomy (Rubin Observatory). Its sensor has 3.2 billion pixels, which lets it pick up extremely fine details in distant galaxies, stars, and other objects in space (SLAC; PetaPixel).
The COSMOS field is a small area of the night sky that many telescopes have photographed over the years. The Rubin Observatory's first image of this field contains hundreds of thousands of distant galaxies, according to the observatory's own description (Rubin Observatory). The more specific count of over half a million galaxies and 50,000 stars comes from reporting by SLAC and PetaPixel in late July and early August 2026 (Phys.org; PetaPixel).
The Rubin Observatory first showed images from its telescope on June 23, 2025 (Rubin Observatory). That early release was essentially a proof of concept — it showed the camera worked. The COSMOS field image released thirteen months later goes a step further: it comes with a catalog, meaning researchers get a structured set of data they can actually use for analysis, not just a pretty picture (SLAC).
The observatory, funded by the NSF and DOE, will photograph the sky repeatedly for 10 years to create a giant, detailed, time-lapse view of the universe (NOIRLab). This project is called the Legacy Survey of Space and Time, or LSST — which is also where the camera gets its name. Over those ten years, the observatory will photograph each part of the sky hundreds of times. That repetition lets astronomers catch things that change or move: exploding stars, asteroids passing near Earth, and other fleeting events, alongside deep maps of the unchanging sky.
The catalog is the key detail. A picture on its own is nice to look at. A catalog tells you the position and brightness of every object the camera detected, along with how confident the measurements are. That is what scientists need to do real research. The difference between the June 2025 images and the July 2026 release is the difference between showing the camera works and handing scientists data they can cite in their work.
Building a camera of this size is only half the challenge. A 3.2-billion-pixel camera produces a huge amount of raw data every single night. The software that processes all that data into organized catalogs has to keep up with the pace of the survey. The fact that Rubin is now releasing a science-ready catalog suggests that this processing pipeline is working on real survey data, not just test images.
The COSMOS field is a good place to check whether everything is working correctly. Because telescopes like Hubble, Spitzer, and Subaru have already studied this area in detail, astronomers can compare Rubin's new catalog against existing data to see if the measurements match up. It is one of the few places in the sky where you can check a new camera's results against an established reference without waiting for years of survey data to pile up.
One field with one catalog is just a start. The ten-year survey will photograph thousands of areas across the southern sky over and over. The science goals range from understanding dark energy to mapping small objects in our solar system, and all of them depend on the camera and software performing well night after night. The COSMOS release is an early sign that the system is working at the level the survey demands. Whether that holds up at full speed and in all weather conditions is something the next year of operations will reveal.
