A scientist named Matt Walker and his team at a company called Kindred Companion Sciences have used a gene-editing tool called CRISPR to create two beagle puppies that don't produce the main protein that makes people allergic to dogs. CRISPR is a tool that works like molecular scissors, letting scientists find a specific gene and turn it off. The team used it to disable the gene that makes Can f 1 in dog skin cells. They then put the edited genetic material into eggs from which the original DNA had been removed, placed those eggs in a beagle surrogate mother, and two healthy female puppies were born in September 2024. Tests of the dogs' saliva and fur found no Can f 1 protein. Walker also did a skin-prick test, which is when small amounts of an allergen are placed on the skin to see if it reacts. His skin was exposed to samples from both edited beagles, a poodle, and a goldendoodle. The edited dogs' samples caused no allergic reaction, while the poodle and goldendoodle samples did. The study tested only two dogs against one person with allergies. Can f 1 is the biggest culprit behind dog allergies, but scientists have identified at least six different allergy-causing proteins in dogs. Because a person's immune system can react to more than one of them, removing Can f 1 alone may not help everyone. The fact that some dogs naturally lack Can f 1 suggests the edit is likely safe, but long-term health data from this genetic line will be needed before any commercial scale-up.

The broader context here is that CRISPR has been used in farm animals for things like disease resistance, but applying it to pets has lagged behind. The market for pets is smaller, and changing pets raises more ethical questions than changing farm animals. The Bailey and Alfie study closes that gap on the technical side while opening new ethical questions. The question for regulators, ethicists, and consumers is whether removing one allergen protein is worth the cost and complexity of gene-edited dogs, especially when breeds already sold as hypoallergenic — though they aren't perfect — serve a similar purpose. SoRelle's call for testing on more people is the minimum next step before anyone can say these dogs work for allergy sufferers in general.

Caplan's concern about shelter adoption points to a wider tension. If hypoallergenic gene-edited dogs become available, the appeal is aimed at households that can't keep dogs because of allergies. But marketing could also pull in buyers who would have otherwise considered rescue animals, especially smaller breeds that are already advertised as hypoallergenic. The net effect on shelter populations is a question the current study does not answer.

The rules for gene-edited companion animals are also unresolved in most places. Farm animals face a patchwork of oversight from the FDA, USDA, and EPA in the United States, but pets fall into a gray zone between farm-animal regulation and the norms of the existing pet-breeding industry. Kindred Companion Sciences has not publicly shared a timeline or plan for bringing these dogs to market, though publishing the results in a peer-reviewed journal signals the company wants to build scientific credibility before any commercial step.
