UK Faces Eclipse Glasses Shortage Days Before 12 August Solar Event

Shoppers across the UK are scrambling for protective eyewear ahead of the 12 August 2026 partial solar eclipse, with high street retailers sold out and online orders arriving too late for the event. The Royal Observatory Greenwich confirmed it had sold out of solar eclipse glasses both online and in its shops, citing an unprecedented volume of orders (The Guardian, 10 August 2026).
The eclipse, visible from the UK on Wednesday 12 August, will be nearly total, with approximately 90–96% of the Sun obscured by the Moon at maximum (Royal Observatory Greenwich). The Royal Observatory has warned that looking directly at the Sun even during an eclipse can cause serious eye damage or blindness (Royal Observatory Greenwich). Ordinary sunglasses and 3D glasses will not protect the eyes, according to the same institution (Royal Observatory Greenwich).
Eclipse glasses must meet the ISO 12312-2 safety standard — an international specification for filters that block harmful levels of solar radiation — to be considered safe for solar viewing, according to the UK Health Security Agency and consumer guidance (UKHSA, 23 July 2026; Mashable, 10 August 2026). The UKHSA published a blog post on 23 July advising the public on safe viewing and warning that only genuine eclipse glasses should be used (UKHSA, 23 July 2026). Buyers were also warned to be wary of eclipse glasses sold on Amazon and to verify ISO 12312-2 certification (Mashable, 10 August 2026).
On the retail front, a pack of Lunt solar eclipse glasses priced at £14.99 on Amazon showed a delivery estimate of Thursday 13 August, too late for the Wednesday eclipse. Robert Dyas offered Bresser eclipse glasses for £2.99 but listed them as out of stock on its website (The Guardian, 10 August 2026). One consumer, Emma from Tonbridge, Kent, found glasses sold out everywhere; a local opticians assistant cut off her call when she enquired. She eventually obtained a single pair from a friend's mother who had purchased a multipack in advance.
Neill Sanders, founder of Go Stargazing and UK coordinator of Astronomers Without Borders, disputed the characterisation of a shortage. Sanders said he had imported 300,000 pairs of eclipse glasses from the United States and had distributed 100,000 pairs in recent weeks at discount prices to astronomy clubs and community groups. In his view, there was no shortage of glasses, only a failure by people to plan ahead (The Guardian, 10 August 2026). An unnamed distributor echoed that assessment, saying they had good stocks but that everyone had left ordering until the last minute and packing capacity was limited.
For those unable to obtain certified glasses, Jake Foster, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, recommended indirect viewing methods. These include projecting the Sun's image through small round holes in household items such as a colander or a piece of paper with a pinhole. The Royal Observatory also hosted an online live stream of the eclipse for UK viewers (Royal Observatory Greenwich).
The stakes for eye safety are well documented. After the 1999 total solar eclipse visible from the UK, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists reported approximately 70 cases of people experiencing vision problems from watching it. Both the UKHSA and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists issued detailed advice ahead of the 2026 event on safe glasses and alternative viewing methods (The Guardian, 10 August 2026).
The supply crunch is not unique to the UK. In Spain, six brands of eclipse glasses were withdrawn after being deemed unsafe by the consumer association FACUA (The Guardian, 10 August 2026). The Guardian also reported that tourists flocking to Spain to view the eclipse could increase the risk of wildfires there. During the 2019 total solar eclipse in Chile and Argentina, a surge in demand for viewing glasses led to widespread store shortages, with street vendors charging as much as $10 per pair (The Guardian, 3 July 2019).
The broader pattern across these events is consistent: demand for certified eyewear spikes in the final days before an eclipse, outstripping both retail stocking cycles and distribution logistics. The ISO 12312-2 certification requirement adds a layer of friction, as consumers must not only find glasses but verify their authenticity, a task complicated by counterfeit or non-compliant products appearing on major marketplaces. The Spanish withdrawal of six non-compliant brands illustrates that risk concretely. For UK consumers, the window between awareness and the Wednesday event has now effectively closed for online purchasing, leaving indirect projection methods, community group distribution, and the Royal Observatory's live stream as the remaining options.
What sets the 2026 UK event apart from 1999 is the intensity of the partial obscuration and the greater reach of public safety messaging. With 90–96% of the Sun blocked at maximum, the dimming will be considerable but the remaining sliver of the solar disc stays hazardous to view without protection. The UKHSA's 23 July advisory, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists' guidance, and widespread media coverage have amplified public awareness, but that awareness has also concentrated demand into a narrow purchasing window. Sanders's distribution of 300,000 imported pairs through community channels suggests supply exists at the wholesale level, but the bottleneck at retail and last-mile delivery has made certified glasses functionally unavailable to many consumers in the final 48 hours.
